Final - 2OT
Caps edge Red Wings in SO
Nov 16, 2013 - 5:54 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Nicklas Backstrom scored the winner in the final round of the shootout as the Washington Capitals took a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.Backstrom was the last shooter after the first five failed to score, and he found the back of the net as he made a move and slipped a low shot past Jimmy Howard for the win.
Alex Ovechkin, Brooks Laich and Michael Latta all scored for the Capitals, who have won two straight and six of their last eight. Braden Holtby made 34 stops in the win.
"You need to have wins like this to grow as a team and gain some consistency," said Holtby. "This game is a credit to our guys for being confident in each other and keep pushing."
Johan Franzen had two goals and an assist, while Danny DeKeyser posted a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who have lost five straight, including the last four in either a shootout or overtime. Howard posted 30 stops.
"We need to find a way to get one more and win the game," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "That's all there is to it. You either need to keep them from getting that tying goal, or get the extra one and make it harder for them."
Washington struck first as Laich stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated down the right wing before firing a shot past Howard at 5:50 of the first.
Skating on the power play, the Red Wings tied the game with 4:08 left in the first as Franzen lasered a shot past Holtby from the left circle.
Franzen's second of the game came a little over two minutes later as a right circle faceoff win saw Franzen take a backdoor pass from Tomas Tatar at the low left side for an easy goal.
The only goal of the second period went to Detroit on the power play thanks to a one-timer from DeKeyser at the right circle with 18 seconds left in the period.
Washington got one back 3:19 into the third as good work in the Detroit end saw Ovechkin finish off the play with a one-timer from the left circle.
The Capitals tied the game with 8:06 left in regulation as Latta finished off a rebound of a John Carlson shot from the left side for his first career goal.
