Preds blank Wings; Detroit's losing streak reaches 7 games
Nov 20, 2013 - 4:58 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Marek Mazanec made 27 saves to notch his first career shutout, as the Nashville Predators extended Detroit's longest losing streak in over 20 years with a 2-0 triumph over the Red Wings on Tuesday at Joe Louis Arena.Gabriel Bourque and Shea Weber each had a goal for the Predators, who have won two straight.
Detroit, on the other hand, has lost seven straight games for the first time since Jan. 14-30, 1991.
The Red Wings had registered a point in five in a row despite the losing streak, but saw Jimmy Howard allow both goals on 25 shots to drop their eighth straight home game.
"It's just a frustrating time for us right now," Howard said. "It doesn't seem like anything's going our way out there, but you've got to go out there and work for your breaks."
The Red Wings hadn't lost eight in a row in Detroit since Nov. 19, 1986 through Dec. 20, 1986.
Neither team found the back of the net until the closing seconds of the middle stanza when the Predators potted a power-play goal to grab a 1-0 lead.
After Detroit's Drew Miller went off for hooking at 19:00, Weber fired a heavy slapper from the high slot that sailed through a screen and past Howard to make it 1-0 with 4.8 seconds left in the period.
Bourque doubled the margin 7:13 into the third when he pounded in a rebound following a strange carom off the end boards for a 2-0 lead.
Mazanec made the lead stand from there, with the 22-year-old rookie turning away all 11 shots he faced in the third to keep his shutout intact.
"They didn't have a lot of good opportunities," Mazanec said. "Our defense played great."
Both goalies stood tall in a scoreless first period that saw Howard make 10 saves while Mazanec stopped seven shots.
