Oilers keep Devils winless in SO victory
Oct 8, 2013 - 6:00 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Eberle and David Perron each beat New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur in the shootout to help the Edmonton Oilers down the New Jersey Devils, 5-4, on Monday. After the Oilers scored four straight goal to erase a three-goal deficit in the third period, Patrick Elias netted the equalizer with 53.6 seconds to go.
Eberle was up first in the shootout and beat Brodeur with a backhander. Damien Brunner sent one wide of the net for the Devils, and Perron followed with a another backhander.
Jason LaBarbera turned away Ryane Clowe's backhander to seal the shootout win.
Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Andrew Ference Perron each scored in regulation for the Oilers, who got their first win after dropping their first two games of the year.
"It was a fun game. It's not a situation we want to put ourselves in, but it was a great win. That final period was great," Nugent-Hopkins said.
LaBarbera made 21 saves to get his first win with the Oilers.
Jaromir Jagr, Michael Ryder and Brunner each tallied for the Devils, who have dropped their first three games of the season.
"We had them exactly where we wanted them," said a disappointed Brodeur, who made 23 saves. "When they got a breath of fresh air they jumped all over us."

Ference scored nearly four minutes later after blasting a slapper past Brodeur, and Perron's snap shot tied the game with 9:13 remaining.
Hall added a wrister with 6:30 to play to give the Oilers the lead, but Elias lit the lamp with short-handed goal with 53.6 ticks showing to force overtime.
Jager scored 2:59 into the game with a snap shot from the point.
Brunner's power-play goal gave the Devils a 2-0 edge six minutes later, and Ryder made it a three-goal game with his tally 4 1/2 minutes into the middle session.
