Reimer, Maple Leafs blank Oilers
Oct 30, 2013 - 5:34 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - James Reimer stopped 43 shots for his first shutout of the season as the Toronto Maple Leafs took a 4-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.Phil Kessel posted two goals and two assists, Nazem Kadri had a goal and two assists, while James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won three of their last four.
Richard Bachman made 22 saves for the Oilers, who have dropped their last four games.
"We out out-finished," Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins said. "We gave them three absolute gifts."
Toronto got on the board just 1:08 into the game as the puck was pushed out of the Toronto end and Kadri caught up to it in the neutral zone. Taking it in down the left wing, he chipped it over to the slot where Kessel was behind the defender and deked to the backhand before sliding the puck in.
Reimer made the lead hold up in the first period by stopping 14 shots, and van Riemsdyk gave him a two-goal lead to work with 1:41 into the second as Kessel skated the puck the other way, cut over to the right circle and centered it for a redirect by van Riemsdyk in front.
"I can't say enough about (Kessel)," van Riemsdyk said. "He sees the ice really well and has a lot of offensive instincts."
Kessel's second of the game and ninth of the year came off from a sharp angle at the left side for a 3-0 lead.
Kadri tipped in a Morgan Reilly one-timer at 6:14 of the third period for a 4-0 lead, and Reimer made 19 saves in the frame to preserve the shutout.
