Jets down Oilers on Trouba's OT goal
Jan 18, 2014 - 11:02 PM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob Trouba lit the lamp twice, including the game-winning goal in overtime, as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2.During the overtime period, Winnipeg's Blake Wheeler received a stretch pass on a breakaway and cut to the middle, but missed the net on his backhand attempt. As Wheeler tracked down the puck in the corner, Trouba drove to the front of the net and outmuscled Anton Belov. Wheeler sent the puck to the rookie, who tipped it past Ilya Bryzgalov for the win.
"We're just having fun and kind of rollin' with it. Nobody really got down when we got down a goal or when they tied it at the end. We responded well, I think everyone was pretty happy with how we played," said Trouba.
Mark Scheifele supplied Winnipeg's other goal and Wheeler had two assists. Ondrej Pavelec made 20 saves as the Jets won their third straight under new head coach Paul Maurice.
Jordan Eberle and David Perron both scored for Edmonton. Bryzgalov made 36 saves for the Oilers, who have dropped four straight.
"They played well, they didn't give you much as far as offensively and space. I think in the third they started to shift the game towards them, they were just out battling us, we couldn't contain them," said Eberle.
After a scoreless first, Eberle opened up the scoring on the power play. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins dished a pass across to the left circle and Eberle snapped the puck past Pavelec nearly seven minutes into the second.
Winnipeg got on the board with a short-handed marker 5:48 into the third. Bryan Little skated to the left circle and weaved past a sliding Edmonton defender before sending the puck across the slot to Trouba, who knotted the score at one.
Scheifele gave the Jets the lead nearly five minutes later. He worked the puck off the boards and drove in on goal. After his initial backhand shot was denied, the rookie stayed with the play and put his own rebound into the back of the net to give the Jets a 2-1 lead.
Perron deflected the puck into the net off Jeff Petry's blast from the point to tie the game with two minutes left in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
