Thomas helps Panthers take down Leafs

Feb 5, 2014 - 5:00 AM Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tim Thomas made 20 saves to lead the Florida Panthers to a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.

Tim Gilbert, Jesse Winchester, Shawn Matthias and Marcel Goc also scored for the Panthers, who snapped a three-game skid.

"It was probably our best game of the year," Matthias said. "It was an exciting game for us. We owed them one. We're all happy about it and we'll think about it for the rest of the night and then on to the next one."

David Clarkson provided the lone goal for the Maple Leafs, who had a three- game winning streak snapped.

"The word to describe it is, we didn't have anything going except one person in the lineup is outstanding for our hockey club and that was our goaltender," Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. "We didn't seem to have any jump or passion to play the game, and it's kind of mind-boggling right now."

Jonathan Bernier allowed three goals on 47 shots in the setback.

After a scoreless opening period, Gilbert got the Panthers on the board with his power-play marker just 1:14 into the middle session. Gilbert took a feed from Campbell at the point and blasted it past Bernier for his third goal of the season.

Campbell made it 2-0 after wristing one into the back of the net at 5:21 of third period. Scott Gomez dropped the disc back to Campbell, who skated in and sent it by Bernier for a two-goal spread.

Just over four minutes later, Clarkson got the Leafs on the board with his snap shot from point blank range.

Matthias made it 3-1 with his sixth goal of the season off a turnover in the Toronto zone and Goc added an empty-netter for the final margin.
