Legwand helps Preds down Kings
Nov 3, 2013 - 6:03 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Legwand lit the lamp twice, including the deciding goal with 3:56 remaining in regulation to send the Nashville Predators past the Los Angeles Kings, 4-3, at Staples Center.Dustin Brown and Mike Richards each scored in the third period to draw the Kings even, but with time winding down Legwand won a faceoff in the offensive zone and cleaned up Mattias Ekholm's shot from the point.
"It was good to see (Legwand) get a reward for some good hard work," Nashville head coach Barry Trotz said.
Carter Hutton made the lead hold up, finishing with 35 saves to snap Nashville's two-game losing streak.
Eric Nystrom and Shea Weber both got the best of Jonathan Quick, who faced only 17 shots and yielded four goals to take the loss.
Anze Kopitar recorded a goal and an assist for the Kings, who had won three of four coming in.
"It doesn't matter where you are, if you get four goals scored on you, you're going to lose," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said.
Patric Hornqvist's screen helped Legwand's wrister from between the circles sail past Quick at the 11:15 mark of the opening period.
The Predators scored again on the power play in the final minute as Weber one- timed Hornqvist's pass into an unoccupied net for a 2-0 lead.
The Kings answered with 36.3 seconds remaining in the first when Kopitar converted a long rebound into the back of the net.
A carom off a referee caused a turnover behind the Kings' net early in the second period. Hornqvist scooped up the loose puck and sent a pass out front to Nystrom for his third assist of the game.
Two goals in a 1:37 span midway through the third period tied the game.
Brown deflected in Kopitar's shot on net at 9:41 to pull Los Angeles within one, and Richards unknowingly knocked in the rebound past a sprawled out Hutton after taking a stick to the face. Richards' tying goal came 29 seconds after Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis was sent off for holding.
