Kings score 3 in 3rd period to beat Islanders
Nov 15, 2013 - 6:36 AM Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Kings exploded for three goals in the third period to beat the New York Islanders 3-2 on Thursday.Slava Voynov, Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli lit the lamp for the Kings, who have won three of four.
"We struggle in those first two period and knew we had to come out strong in the third," said Pearson. "We got that first one there and things kind of rolled from there."
Ben Scrivens made 23 saves. Starting Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick has a grade-2 groin strain and a timetable for his return is unknown.
Casey Cizikas and Aaron Ness scored for the Islanders, who have dropped five of six. Kevin Poulin turned aside 21-of-24 shots.
"I don't think we had the same energy in the third that we had in the first two," said Poulin. "We didn't play the way we could and that's what happened."
Poulin stopped all 15 shots he face over the first two periods to keep Los Angeles off the board. He made two more big saves early in the third stanza.
Voynov got the Kings on the board at the 5:34 mark. Anze Kopitar controlled the puck behind the net and found Voynov in the lower right circle. Voynov managed to sneak a sharp-angle shot past Poulin.
Los Angeles tied the game with a power-play goal at the 12:15 mark. Pearson's wrister from the right circle snuck through Poulin's five-hole and trickled across the line. It was Pearson's first NHL goal.
Toffoli's deflection of Jake Muzzin's wrister from the left point beat Poulin with 1:33 remaining.
The Islanders pulled Poulin for an extra attacker with one minute remaining. Scrivens survived a crazy final minute and the Kings held on.
The Islanders drew first blood at the 2:44 mark of the second period. Cizikas' backhander got past a sprawled out Scrivens.
Ness scored his first NHL goal just over two minutes later. John Tavares controlled the puck in the right circle and slid a cross-ice pass to Ness, whose one-timer beat Scrivens.
