Preds edge Kings in wild finish
Dec 29, 2013 - 6:53 AM Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Fisher scored his second goal of the third period with 26.4 seconds remaining as the Nashville Predators defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 at Bridgestone Arena.Fisher scored on a power play to give Nashville a 2-1 lead with 3:18 left to go in the third. But with Los Angeles goaltender Ben Scrivens on the bench for an extra skater, Jeff Carter one-timed a pass from Anze Kopitar and scored the tying goal from atop the right circle with 36.7 seconds showing.
The Predators quickly answered on the next shift. Colin Wilson skated down the left wing and fed Fisher in the middle. Fisher's shot went off Scrivens, who tried to swipe the puck away before it completely crossed the goal line. The call on the ice was a goal and a video review upheld the referee's ruling.
Marek Mazanec made 26 saves for Nashville, which snapped a five-game winless streak.
"It was nice to get back in the win column for sure," said Nashville rookie Seth Jones, who had two assists. "We weren't playing too bad, we just couldn't find a way to win."
Scrivens stopped 28 shots for the Kings, who have dropped two straight in regulation for the first time since Oct. 4-7, the second and third games of the season.
"They got one late, we tried to get another one late, but we gotta be better five-on-five," said Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin.
Tyler Toffoli went off for holding with 4:31 to play and Nashville was able to capitalize. The Predators cleared the Los Angeles zone themselves and Fisher caught the Kings in a line change after retrieving the puck. He carried across the blue line and beat Scrivens on the blocker side from the slot.
Nashville had failed to convert on a 5-on-3 for 47 seconds in the second period.
Patric Hornqvist staked the Predators to a 1-0 lead at 14:42 of the first period, but Kopitar's power-play goal tied things up 7:05 into the middle stanza.
