Blues deal Kings fifth straight loss
Jan 3, 2014 - 6:20 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - T.J. Oshie scored two goals, Brian Elliott made 30 saves and the St. Louis Blues extended the woes of the slumping Los Angeles Kings with a 5-0 thrashing at Scot trade Center.Brenden Morrow had a goal and one assist for the Blues, who won their fourth game in a row. Elliott recorded his third shutout of the season in the 100th win for Ken Hitchcock as St. Louis' head coach.
"When you're creating scoring chances from your pursuit and checking, it's a good sign because you're willing to work to create scoring chances," Hitchcock said.
Martin Jones got the start between the pipes for Los Angeles, but was pulled in the second period after allowing two goals on 14 shots. Ben Scrivens stopped only nine shots in relief as the Kings lost their fifth consecutive game, all in regulation.
"We're down on ourselves, but we can't be," said Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. "We need to pick ourselves up, we need to get that confidence back."
The Blues grabbed a 1-0 lead on Morrow's power play goal. A one-time blast by Kevin Shattenkirk sailed wide of the net, but Morrow collected the carom off the boards at the left post and chipped it behind Jones 4:42 into the contest.
Oshie scored his two goals 1:31 apart in the second period. Vladimir Sobotka set up both tallies by winning faceoffs in the Los Angeles zone.
Jaden Schwartz fired a shot that was knocked down before it reached the net and Oshie pounced on the loose puck in the slot for another power-play goal at 11:41. He made it 3-0 with a wrister from the left circle that beat a recently inserted Scrivens at 13:12.
Vladimir Tarasenko and Barret Jackman added third-period goals for St. Louis.
