Wild slip past Jets in shootout
Nov 24, 2013 - 1:57 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Charlie Coyle's tally in the fourth round of the shootout sent Minnesota past Winnipeg, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at MTS Centre. After Niklas Backstrom turned away Devin Setoguchi, Coyle snaked his way through the zone and managed to pull Ondrej Pavelec to the left post while he slid the puck inside the far pipe to end the contest.
Nino Niederreiter and Zach Parise scored for the Wild, who improved to 9-1-1 in November.
Backstrom stopped 37 shots and three of four in the breakaway round in relief of Josh Harding, who was a late scratch after suffering a lower-body injury in warmups.
"He's the difference in the game for us. I mean obviously I give our players a great deal of credit for dealing with the adversity with what happened at the beginning of the game," said Wild head coach Mike Yeo. "It's a little bit easier to deal with it when you see your goalie go out and play the way that he was."
Michal Frolik and Matt Halischuk provided the offense for the Jets, who have gone winless in their last four (0-2-2) but dropped a pair of shootouts in that span.
Pavelec finished with 33 stops in the loss.
The Jets finally solved Backstrom and produced the game's first goal with 6:53 remaining in the second period. Halischuk worked a puck free on the right boards in the Minnesota zone, and Backstrom was unable to handle his shot. Frolik then barreled through the crease and tipped the loose disc home.
Niederreiter evened the score with 3:21 played in the third, picking a loose puck off a Marco Scandella blast from Pavelec's pads and tucking it home.
Halischuk potted his own rebound from the right side for a 2-1 Jets edge just over two minutes later, but Parise's quick shot while shorthanded tied the score with 4:55 remaining.
"I thought we played a pretty good game I thought we for the most part we got a good effort from a lot of players and as you can see winning and losing is determined by a fine line for us," noted Jets head coach Claude Noel.
