Price is right for Canadiens in Winnipeg
Oct 16, 2013 - 4:42 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Carey Price notched his first shutout of the season by turning aside all 36 shots he faced, as Montreal silenced Winnipeg by a 3-0 count on Tuesday at MTS Centre.Brandon Prust and P.K. Subban hit the back of the net in the first period for the Canadiens, who improved to 4-2-0 on the season after completing a 3-1 road trip.
Ondrej Pavelec made 22 saves in the setback for the Jets, who have lost four of their last five games.
Montreal grabbed a 1-0 lead when Prust's backhander off a Danny Briere centering feed hit the net just 2:06 after the opening faceoff.
The Habs took a 2-0 edge at 11:28 on Subban's blast from the left point, set up by a cross-ice dish by David Desharnais.
"We were ready to play. We wanted to dictate the pace. We wanted to surprise them with our intensity," Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien said.
Price wrapped up eight shots in the first period, then 13 more in the second to keep the Montreal lead at two.
Jets captain Andrew Ladd fumbled the puck off a 2-on-1 short-handed rush roughly 90 seconds into the third period and the hosts began to press.
Despite 15 shots on goal, Price did not budge. Winnipeg's hopes for a comeback were dashed when Bryan Little was sent off for cross-checking with 2:18 to play, and Briere placed the insurance tally into the empty net one minute later.
"This one was a tough game, a game certainly we didn't have much control over," Jets head coach Claude Noel said.
