Blues blank Devils

Jan 29, 2014 - 4:41 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Alexander Steen scored his 27th goal of the season and Jaroslav Halak stopped 23 shots for his fourth shutout of the campaign, as the St. Louis Blues blanked the New Jersey Devils, 3-0, on Tuesday at Scottrade Center.

Brenden Morrow and Maxim Lapierre registered a goal apiece for St. Louis, which has won three straight since an embarrassing 7-1 setback in New Jersey on Jan. 21.

Cory Schneider recorded 22 saves for the Devils, who were coming off a 7-3 loss to the rival New York Rangers at Yankee Stadium on Sunday.

"I thought we played a pretty solid road game," Schneider said. "Right now, solid isn't good enough against the elite teams in the league."

After killing off an early New Jersey power play, St. Louis cracked the scoreboard 3:25 into the opening frame as Steen finished off a 3-on-2 rush with a wrister from the slot that deflected off a defender before slipping past Schneider for a 1-0 lead.

"It was a huge kill," Halak said of keeping New Jersey off the board despite the early power play. "It gave us a boost and I was happy we were able to get the first (goal) tonight."

Following a scoreless second stanza, the Blues created some breathing room with a power-play goal near the midpoint of the third, as Morrow redirected Jay Bouwmeester's right point blast under Schneider's glove at 9:42.

Lapierre potted an empty netter with 2:08 remaining to account for the final margin.
