Rangers edge Isles to sweep Stadium Series
Jan 30, 2014 - 5:31 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Daniel Carcillo's goal broke a tie 4:36 into the third period, and the New York Rangers swept the two-game series at Yankee Stadium with a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night. The Rangers went ahead when Carcillo banged home a rebound in the slot. Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov had turned away Dominic Moore's shot from the bottom of the right circle.
The Islanders had a couple of close calls with Nabokov on the bench for an extra skater. The best chance belonged to Kyle Okposo, who was alone on the doorstep but missed the net with four seconds remaining.
Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves for the Rangers, who snapped a two-game losing streak with Sunday's 7-3 outdoor win over New Jersey.
"Obviously, tonight the conditions, the puck was bouncing quite a bit for both teams. It made it challenging to make plays with the puck," Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault said. "It was a very competitive game and we were able to put one more past their goaltender than they were able to put past ours."
Nabokov stopped 32 shots in his first start since he suffered a lower-body injury against Dallas on Jan. 6.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Islanders.
"We tried to dictate the pace, and they were pushing the pace," Islanders head coack Jack Capuano said.
The teams exchanged goals 40 seconds apart late in the second period.
Cal Clutterbuck fell attempting to pull up in the left circle, but he was still able to dish the puck from his stomach. Matt Donovan then tipped the pass to Brock Nelson and he fired a flat one-timer through Lundqvist's pads with 1:27 remaining.
Benoit Pouliot responded for the Blueshirts, collecting a loose puck and beating a prone Nabokov from close range with 47 seconds left.
