Rangers rip Leafs in Toronto
Jan 5, 2014 - 5:59 AMDominic Moore scored twice, backup goalie Cam Talbot had 25 saves and the New York Rangers rolled to a 7-1 win Saturday over the Maple Leafs, who took the ice for the first time since their victory in the Winter Classic on New Year's Day.
Carl Hagelin, Benoit Pouliot, Chris Kreider, Brad Richards and Brian Boyle also scored for the Rangers, who ended a five-game road trip 3-2 and beat the Leafs for the sixth time in their last seven meetings.
They bounced back from a 5-2 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday.
"I know the guys were ready last night. We turned the page on it, we analyzed it and got ready for tonight," said Rangers coach Alain Vigneault.
Joffrey Lupul scored and Jonathan Bernier let in five goals on 32 shots for Toronto, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. James Reimer played the last 23-plus minutes in net and gave up two goals on 18 shots.
The Leafs, after beating Detroit on snow-covered ice at Michigan Stadium, were trying to win four games in a row for the first time this season.
Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said he didn't expect any sort of Winter Classic "hangover" to last more than a period.
"That would be my assumption of it, that you might start out flat for a period but you'd be able to get your legs back under you and get your game going to at least be more competitive," he said. "I expected a lot more from our group than what we got."
Dan Girardi's shot from the high right side went off Hagelin 6:57 into the game and Moore's snap shot from the left at 15:57 made it 2-0.
Pouliot, Kreider and Moore scored goals in under six minutes in the second period to give the Rangers a 5-0 lead.
Lupul clanged one off the post and in from the right circle just 67 seconds after Moore's goal to get Toronto on the board.
Richards faked a pass on a 2-on-1 and scored 9:03 into the third period and Boyle got the game's only power play goal at 16:04.
