Leafs move to 3-0 after comeback SO win against Sens
Oct 6, 2013 - 7:18 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Mason Raymond and Tyler Bozak tallied shootout goals while Jonathan Bernier turned away both shots he faced to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-4 shootout victory over the Ottawa Senators.Bernier stopped all 15 shots he faced in regulation and overtime after taking over between the pipes midway through the second period for James Reimer, who yielded four goals on 21 shots.
Raymond, Nazem Kadri, Joffrey Lupul and James van Riemsdyk scored for Toronto, which overcame a 4-2 deficit to force extra time. Lupul notched his goal 17 seconds before the second intermission and van Riemsdyk lit the lamp 2:52 into the third frame to tie the score.
"We played in parts and we were sloppy throughout it but we still found a way to get two points," Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle remarked. "So we'll take that and move on."
Kyle Turris had a goal and two assists for the Sens while Cory Conacher, Jared Cowen and Jason Spezza each registered a goal in defeat.
Craig Anderson stopped 38-of-42 shots he faced in net for Ottawa, which opened its season with a 1-0 victory at Buffalo on Friday.
Raymond started the shootout with a nifty spin move, tapping in an easy goal after faking out Anderson. Milan Michalek then skated in and ripped a shot off the crossbar. After Bozak slid a goal under Anderson, Spezza was denied to end the contest.
"I think it's a very unfair play for the goaltender for the guy to come in and blow snow on him," Senators head coach Paul MacLean said of Raymond's spin move in the shootout. "To me he came to a full stop and the puck went backwards and came forwards, but that's me. I'm only a fisherman from Nova Scotia, so I don't know nothin' about nothin'."
Trailing 4-2 late in the second period, Toronto charged down the ice and got the puck to Kadri, who passed to Raymond on the goal line. Raymond surveyed the ice and sent a sharp pass to Lupul, who occupied space in the middle. Lupul corralled the puck and smacked one past Anderson for a 4-3 deficit heading into the third.
Early in the third period, Phil Kessel flipped it to himself along the boards and chased down the puck for a 2-on-1 rush. Kessel skated toward the net and dropped a pass to van Riemsdyk, who knocked it in to tie the game.
Ottawa snapped a 2-2 tie with a pair of goals 15 seconds apart midway through the second. Cowen broke the draw with a wrister into a relatively open net after Reimer was taken down by his own defender earlier in the play. Spezza controlled a faceoff seconds later and one-timed a loose puck for a 4-2 advantage.
The Leafs opened the scoring on Raymond's second goal of the season. Quick passing behind the net by Troy Bodie and Dave Bolland led to Raymond tapping it in from point blank.
Turris scored the first Senators goal on a beautiful feed from a slashing Cowen and set up Conacher's go-ahead tally minutes later. Taking advantage of sloppy defending in front of Reimer, Turris poked the puck toward the net, where an opportunistic Conacher was there to bat it home.
Raymond set up Kadri's goal late in the opening period, faking a shot and laying a pass to the left of Anderson, where an open Kadri easily put it home.
Game Notes
