Final
Anderson, Sens blank struggling Caps
Jan 22, 2014 - 6:38 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Craig Anderson made 34 saves for his third shutout of the season in the Ottawa Senators' 2-0 victory over the struggling Washington Capitals on Tuesday.Kyle Turris and Jason Spezza scored for the Senators, who have won seven straight against Washington.
"I thought our team game was very solid throughout," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "I thought we played a really good 60 minutes in the game. I thought the momentum swings we handled well or dictated a little bit of it. Obviously, our penalty-killers did a very good job, and our goaltender made saves when we needed it."
Braden Holtby stopped 24-of-26 shots for the Capitals, who have lost six straight games (0-4-2) for the first time since an 0-6-2 stretch from Dec. 2-18, 2010.
Washington forward Alex Ovechkin, who is the NHL's leading goal scorer, missed Tuesday's game with a lower-body injury. It was the third contest Ovechkin sat out this season due to injury.
"If you're not winning, there's a reason you're not winning," Capitals forward Brooks Laich said. "When you win, it's because you deserve to win, generally. And if you're not winning, do something extra. Honestly, we're tired of talking about it. Well done is better than well said. If you want to talk about it, go show it on the ice. Guys have tried it.
"The locker room, nobody's yelling and screaming in here. We have to prove it to our teammates, prove it to yourself, the organization. We have to be better as players."
Turris scored what proved to be the game-winner 12:59 into the second period. His shot from the top of the right circle got past Holtby.
Spezza's power-play goal 8:56 into the third stanza made it 2-0. His shot from the left circle beat Holtby.
Anderson made a total of 24 saves over the final two frames to secure his 25th career shutout.
