Senators rally, top Blues in shootout

Feb 5, 2014 - 5:33 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Turris delivered the deciding goal in the fifth round of the shootout to give the Ottawa Senators a 5-4 come-from- behind win over the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center.

The Senators trailed 3-1 after two periods before moving in front on goals by Milan Michalek, Turris and Jason Spezza in succession during the third. Spezza added a pair of assists and Erik Karlsson scored once while assisting on another to help Ottawa salvage the finale of a three-game road trip that began with back-to-back defeats.

Robin Lehner came up with 46 saves to aid the Senators' cause.

T.J. Oshie had a goal and an assist for St. Louis, which also received markers from Brenden Morrow, David Backes and Jordan Leopold. Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 shots in the setback.

"The boys played hard tonight against a hard-working team," Oshie said. "We want the two points but we'll take the one point and focus on Thursday."

Ottawa erased its two-goal deficit by scoring three times within a two-minute, 35-second span in the third period, though its lead was later erased when Lehner couldn't corral a bad-angle shot from Leopold that trickled over the line for a 4-4 tie with 8:52 left.

The Senators were able to force the shootout by killing off a pair of late penalties, however, including a hooking call to Clarke MacArthur with under a minute remaining in overtime.

Stephane Da Costa later extended the game further by sneaking a shot under Halak's right pad in the third round of the deciding phase, with the score evening the shootout at 2-2. Lehner then stoned the next two St. Louis skaters before Turris ended it with a quick wrister that beat Halak to the stick side.

"To have the response we did in the third, to come out and not only tie it up but get the lead and force it to go into overtime, to get the two points like we did in a tough building to play in against a very good team is huge," Turris said.

Spezza led the Senators' rally by having a hand in two of the three third- period goals, first feeding Michalek for a scorching wrister over Halak's glove during a 3-on-2 rush 5:52 into the third and later potting the go-ahead marker at 8:27. After Marc Methot kept the puck into the St. Louis zone, Spezza successfully used a Blues defender as a screen and ripped a blast into the top-right corner of the net for a 4-3 Senators' edge.

In between, Turris' centering attempt from the left corner caromed off the Blues' Jay Bouwmeester's skate and snuck past Halak to tie the score with 12:58 to go.

The Blues carried a 1-0 lead after one period behind 13 saves from Halak and a goal from Morrow, who tapped in a Patrik Berglund feed while crashing the net with 5:52 to play in the frame.

Ottawa drew even on a spectacular connection between Spezza and Karlsson with 5:10 remaining in the second. The Sens' captain spun around and fired a backhand cross-ice give that the star defenseman one-timed home in a single motion.

The stalemate lasted all of 19 seconds, though. St. Louis' Magnus Paajarvi rushed down the left wing shortly after the ensuing faceoff and got off an attempt that Lehner kicked away, but Oshie was all alone to deposit the rebound up high to send the Blues back in front.

St. Louis, which peppered Lehner with 23 shots during the middle session, increased the margin in the waning seconds of the period. A long drive by Barret Jackman was blocked in front of the Ottawa net and went straight to Jaden Schwartz, who threw across a pass that Backes fired into an opening 4.7 seconds prior to the second intermission.

Game Notes

The Blues lost for the first time in 19 home games (18-0-1) this season when scoring three goals or more and fell for only the fourth time in 29 games (25-0-4) when leading after two periods ... Schwartz finished with two assists and Ottawa's Mika Zibanejad registered a pair of helpers as well ... Backes now has a goal in three straight outings, while Morrow has three goals and seven assists over an eight-game point streak against Ottawa ... The Senators swept the season series, having posted a 3-2 overtime decision in Ottawa on Dec. 16, and are 7-2-0 in their last nine meetings with the Blues.
