Coyotes down Caps in SO
Nov 10, 2013 - 6:24 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Antoine Vermette scored the winner in the shootout as the Phoenix Coyotes rallied for a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals.Vermette buried the first shot of the shootout past Michal Neuvirth and Mikhail Grabovski lost control of the puck making a move. Mikkel Boedker then flew down the ice and deked to the backhand before lifting it high into the net, and Alex Ovechkin missed his chance to give Phoenix the win.
Shane Doan scored twice and Lauri Korpikoski also scored for the Coyotes, who have won six of their last seven, including four straight wins in the shootout. Mike Smith made 29 stops in the win.
"Smitty made some big saves in the third to keep us in the game," Doan said of his goaltender.
Troy Brouwer, Joel Ward and John Carlson all scored for the Capitals, who had won a season-high four straight coming in. Neuvirth stopped 32 shots in the loss.
"This one slipped away from us," Carlson said. "It's unacceptable."
Phoenix trailed by two goals later in the game, but got one back with 3:26 to play as a shot on net from the left boards by Vermette was stopped, but Korpikoski was in the slot to backhand home the rebound as he was falling to the ice.
With 2:01 to play, Nate Schmidt was called for delay of game as his clearing attempt went over the glass, and the Coyotes tied the game 15 seconds later as Doan skated to the left circle with the puck and lasered a wrist shot past Neuvirth.
Phoenix scored the first goal of the game while on the power play as Doan picked up a rebound in the slot and shot it home at 9:16 of the first period.
The Capitals tied the game with a power-play goal of their own on Brouwer's blast from the right circle just 38 seconds into the second period.
Just three minutes later, Washington took the lead with another power-play goal on Carlson's one-timer from the slot, and it was a 3-1 game with 3:33 to play in the middle stanza as a broken play saw Ward sweep it in from the left side for his seventh of the season.
