Ekman-Larsson lifts Coyotes over Blues in OT
Nov 13, 2013 - 6:33 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored 56 seconds into overtime to lift the Phoenix Coyotes over the St. Louis Blues, 3-2, on Tuesday.David Moss and Mikkel Boedker lit the lamp in regulation for the Coyotes, who improved to 13-4-2 on the season. Mike Smith stopped 37-of-39 shots.
"It was nice for me to play like that tonight and to bail the guys out," Smith said.
Maxim Lapierre and Roman Polak scored for the Blues, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Jaroslav Halak made 16 saves.
"The goalie was better than we were," St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock said of Smith. "The goalie was more determined than some of our shooters were."
St. Louis was trying for its best start in franchise history on Tuesday. The Blues came into the game with an 11-2-2 record through 15 games, matching the best start by the franchise over that span first set in 1993-94 and done again in 1997-98. St. Louis lost its 16th game of the campaign in the aforementioned seasons.
Polak scored his second of the season 2:49 into the third period to tie the game at two. He received a cross-ice pass from Alexander Steen and beat Smith from the bottom of the right circle.
Smith made 12 saves in the third frame to help send the game into overtime.
Just 56 seconds into overtime, Ekman-Larsson beat Halak on a shot from the point.
Lapierre redirected Jay Bouwmeester's wrist shot past Smith 5:53 into the game to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead.
The Coyotes responded with two goals to go in front. Moss' shot from the right circle beat Halak at the 7:49 mark. Boedker scored on a 3-on-1 rush to give Phoenix a 2-1 edge with 31 seconds remaining in the first frame.
Game Notes
The Blues swept three games from the Coyotes last season ... Steen extended his point streak to 11 games ... Phoenix forwards Radim Vrbata and Martin Hanzal missed the game ... St. Louis forward Brenden Morrow returned to the lineup after missing five games with an upper-body injury .. The Blues and defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo agreed to a one-year contract on Tuesday.
