Sharks stay hot with win over Leafs
Dec 4, 2013 - 6:56 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Brad Stuart scored the game-winning goal in the second period and the San Jose Sharks continued to roll with a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.Mike Brown, Joe Thornton and Logan Couture also scored for the Sharks, who have won six in a row and nine of 10. Antti Niemi made 28 stops in the win.
"I thought the game began really well for us then we let them get back into it," said San Jose head coach Todd McLellan. "We were outplayed there for a while and it was kind of embarrassing."
Mason Raymond and Phil Kessel lit the lamp for the Maple Leafs, who have lost five straight. James Reimer allowed three goals on 40 shots in the loss.
"We've got to find ways to keep the other team off the scoreboard a little better," said Reimer. "We battled back and tied it, but then they got the lead right back. It was a good game, but we're disappointed that we lost."
San Jose scored halfway through the first period, as Jason Demers sent a shot on net from the right boards that was deflected in by Brown for his second of the year.
Skating on the power play, the Sharks took a 2-0 lead at 14:31 of the first as Joe Pavelski sent a pass from the left circle to the right where Thornton wristed it home.
Toronto tied the game on a pair of power-play goals in the second period, the first of which came at 2:44 as Raymond skated in down the left wing and snuck a wrister under the right pad of Niemi.
Just over seven minutes later, the Leafs tied the game as James van Riemsdyk got a nifty shot on net from the low right side that saw Tyler Bozak feed the rebound over to the left and Kessel slam it home for his 15th of the season.
The Sharks, though, made it a 3-2 game with four minutes to play in the second as Stuart skated down to the low left side and flipped a pass out front where it hit off a Leaf with Pavelski doing battle.
Niemi stopped eight shots in the final frame, and Couture sealed the victory with an empty-netter with 1:24 to play.
