Final
Lightning down Blues
Nov 3, 2013 - 4:43 AM Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Killorn registered a goal and two assists as the Tampa Bay Lightning doubled up the visiting St. Louis Blues 4-2.Brett Connolly, recalled from Syracuse of the American Hockey League on Thursday, broke a 2-2 tie in the third period. He tipped a Radko Gudas shot behind St. Louis goaltender Jaroslav Halak at 8:37, three seconds after a hooking penalty on the Blues' Vladimir Sobotka had expired.
Valtteri Filppula then scored on a backhand that deflected in off St. Louis defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk with 3:59 remaining.
Steven Stamkos had the other goal for Tampa Bay, which has won two straight and five of its last six games overall. Ben Bishop made 28 saves to improve to 9-2-0 this season.
The win was "huge," said Killorn.
"You look at their record and you know they've done very well," he said. "We played them in the preseason so we knew what to expect. It's nice to get a win over a team of that caliber."
Alex Pietrangelo and Jaden Schwartz both scored for the Blues, who were dealt just their second regulation loss (8-2-2). Halak stopped 21 shots.
"We have to control the puck a little bit better," said Schwartz. "We turned it over too much and they're a speedy group ... so they're pretty dangerous."
Pietrangelo extended his career-best goal streak to four games at the 7:50 mark of the first period. The defenseman's wrister from the right point found its way through traffic and behind Bishop.
Tampa Bay responded nearly three minutes later. Killorn had his first shot blocked, but he re-gathered the puck and beat Halak at 10:44.
Stamkos gave Tampa Bay the lead with his 11th goal of the season. The sniper dangled the puck with a toe drag before snapping a shot over Halak's glove 1:43 into the second period.
This time, the Blues quickly answered with the equalizer. Shattenkirk sent the puck airborne, flipping it forward from the St. Louis zone and down the ice. Schwartz collected the puck, cut to the middle and beat Bishop on the stick side from between the circles at 3:45.
Game Notes
St. Louis forward Alexander Steen had his career-high goal streak snapped at six games. He did pick up an assist, giving him a seven-game point streak ... Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.
