Lombardi's two goals lift Flames over Stars
Oct 13, 2007 - 3:36 AM By John Tranchina PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterDALLAS (Ticker) -- Matthew Lombardi helped the Calgary Flames finally get a win in Dallas.
Lombardi tied the game midway through the third period and scored the game-winner at 3:20 of overtime as the Flames posted a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night.
It was the first victory for Mike Keenan as coach of the Flames, who won for the first time in Dallas since December 14, 2001 - a span of eight meetings.
After Lombardi tied the game with 9:14 left in the third period, he took advantage of Brenden Morrow's bad pass and blasted a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle past goaltender Marty Turco to give Calgary the win.
Mike Modano got the Stars on the board early with his first goal of the season and 508th career. The tally also moved him within four points of tying Phil Housley for most by an American-born player in NHL history.
Jussi Jokinen had the puck behind the net, and his pass out front bounced off two different skates before ending up on Modano's stick in the left circle, where he drilled a one-timer off the left goalpost and in at 4:27 of the opening period.
Calgary captain Jarome Iginla tied it with just 21.6 seconds remaining in the opening period, unleashing a scorching wrist shot from the top of the right circle that went between two skaters' legs and over Turco's right shoulder.
Niklas Hagman, who scored a career-high 18 goals last season, continued his torrid pace with his fifth tally of this campaign for the Stars at 9:05 of the second period.
The left wing put a blazing slap shot past netminder Miikka Kiprusoff from the top of the left circle to snap a 1-1 tie with just four seconds remaining on a power play.
In a battle of two of the NHL's best goalies, each of whom took turns making excellent saves, Kiprusoff finished on top. In beating Dallas for the first time in his career, the Finn turned aside 24 shots, while Turco finished with 23 saves.
