Langkow nets pair, Flames finally grab a home win

Oct 19, 2007 - 5:57 AM
CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Calgary Flames finally won a home game.

Daymond Langkow scored two goals and the Flames overcame an early deficit to post a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

Calgary, which led the NHL with 30 home wins last season, lost each of its first two games at the Pengrowth Saddledome, falling to the Philadelphia Flyers - who finished last in the league in 2006-07 - and the Vancouver Canucks.

The Flames looked like they were headed to another home defeat as they spotted the Kings a 2-0 lead. But Calgary roared back with four straight goals to take control.

"We found ways to put the puck in the net and also protect the lead," said Calgary defenseman Robyn Regehr, who had two assists. "It's something we haven't done a very good job of in the last couple games."

Kristian Huselius cut the deficit to 2-1 with a power-play goal with seven seconds left in the first period.

Langkow tied the game with his first tally at 6:11 of the middle session.

"He's red hot," said Regehr, who originally was credited with the goal. "It doesn't surprise me whatsoever that he got the goal. He's always battling in front of the net. He seems to be able to get his stick on those shots fairly consistently."

Former King Craig Conroy put the Flames ahead for the first time just over five minutes later, and Langkow made it 4-2 with a power-play goal with 3:58 left in the period.

"It's a big win, obviously, coming off that loss in Colorado (on Tuesday)," Langkow said. "It's a big character builder. We got down early, but we were able to come back."

With the Kings on a 5-on-3 power play, Anze Kopitar halved Calgary's lead at 11:40 of the third with his fourth goal of the season. Standing just to the right of the net, Kopitar took a cross-ice feed from Alexander Frolov and roofed a shot over goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff.

Coming off a shootout win on Tuesday over the previously undefeated Minnesota Wild, Los Angeles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period.

While on the power play, Michael Cammalleri recorded his seventh goal of the season four minutes into the opening session to make it 1-0, firing a shot from the blue line that went between Kiprusoff's legs.

"(Cammaleri's) playing great," said Los Angeles' Jason LaBarbera, who relieved starting goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin in the third period. "I played against him in the American League, too, and I know what kind of player he is.

"He's a guy who is great with the puck. He's really good around the net. The biggest thing with him is, he works at it. He's such a smart guy. He understands the game."

Kopitar assisted on Cammalleri's tally and also set up Dustin Brown for Los Angeles' next goal just over six minutes later that doubled the advantage.

Kiprusoff made 31 saves for the Flames.

Aubin, who was making his second start for the Kings since returning from a groin injury, gave up four goals on 18 shots before being lifted after two periods. LaBarbera stopped all 11 shots he faced in the third as Los Angeles attempted to rally.

"It's never easy to go in like that," LaBarbera said. "Being a backup goalie is always tough. I always get stressed out because you never know what's going to happen. You don't know if you're going to go in."
