Three third-period goals propel Islanders past Rangers
Nov 7, 2007 - 4:02 AM By Doug Mittler PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterUNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Islanders again used some third-period magic from Miroslav Satan and found a way to beat one of the NHL's hottest goaltenders.
Satan scored a power-power play goal with 8:48 remaining to cap a three-goal third period that ended Henrik Lundqvist's scoreless streak at 159-plus minutes and gave the Islanders a 3-2 victory over the rival New York Rangers on Tuesday.
Trent Hunter and Ruslan Fedotenko also scored for the Islanders, who won their third straight game and recorded their third consecutive one-goal victory over their Atlantic Division foes dating back to last season.
Satan scored on wrist shot from between the faceoff circles that went over the shoulder of Lundqvist. Satan, who had just one goal in his first nine games, netted a pair of third-period tallies to rally the Islanders past the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
"After the second period, we still had 20 minutes. Everyone chipped in," Satan said. "We've talked about playing for 60 minutes."
The Islanders had tied it at 2-2 less than two minutes earlier, when Fedotenko scored a power-play goal at 9:17, one-timing a pass from Mike Comrie in the right circle.
"I'm disappointed in myself because we didn't get the win," Lundqvist said. "There were chances everywhere and pucks everywhere."
The Rangers fell to 0-5-1 away from Madison Square Garden this season, joining the Tampa Bay Lightning as the only teams without a road win.
"We're a good team. We're not going to dwell on that," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "We're a good hockey team."
Rick DiPietro was back in goal for the Islanders and stopped 26 shots. He was forced to leave Saturday's game after being hit in the eye with a high stick from Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.
DiPietro faced just four shots in the first period but made several key saves late in the game after the Islanders took the lead. There was no lingering effects from the eye problem.
"I knew (Monday) night I would play as long as the eye responded," DiPietro said. "It was a great game. The building was rockin'. You never would have known it was the first week of November."
The Rangers did get to DiPietro with 6:20 left in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. With Fedotenko in the penalty box for tripping, Chris Drury scored his third goal of the season, taking a pass from defenseman Paul Mara above the left circle and one-timing a shot that beat DiPietro to the glove side.
Lundqvist was the league's hottest netminder entering the third period of Tuesday's contest. He had not given up a goal since the New Jersey Devils scored in the first period on Saturday.
"Every goaltender in the league is good," Islanders coach Ted Nolan said. "You can't get frustrated when you're playing someone like (Lundqvist) because there are so many good ones."
Lundqvist made 30 saves against the Flyers on Monday and stopped another 12 shots over the first two sessions of this contest.
The Islanders, however, came out flying in the third, tying the game 68 seconds into period when Hunter scored from the right circle off a pass from Fedotenko.
"I asked them to give what they had to give, and they gave more," Nolan said.
The Rangers went ahead, 2-1, when Sean Avery slid a perfect pass outside the crease to Mara, who beat DiPietro for his first goal of the season.
