Satan continues late heroics as Islanders edge Devils
Nov 11, 2007 - 4:19 AM By Doug Mittler PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterUNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- More third-period heroics by Miroslav Satan helped the New York Islanders keep Martin Brodeur one victory shy of a milestone.
Satan scored during a two-man advantage to snap a third-period tie and Rick DiPietro stopped 20 shots as the Islanders edged the New Jersey Devils, 2-1, on Saturday and prevented Brodeur from winning his 500th career game.
Josef Vasicek also scored for the Islanders, who won their fourth straight game and finished a successful six-game homestand with a 5-1-0 mark.
Dainius Zubrus tallied for the Devils, who remained in last place in the Atlantic Division.
Satan's goal was his fifth of the season and third winner in the third period in as many games. The others came last Saturday in Al Arbour's 1,500th game as coach of the Islanders and again Tuesday against the New York Rangers.
"It's the way it's going. It's pointless to analyze it," Satan said. "I'm just glad I could help the team."
The Islanders were awarded a two-man advantage following a cross-checking call on Devils defenseman Sheldon Brookbank along with a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct at 5:13 of the third. It was unclear on who was responsible for the bench minor.
"All I will say is that it was taken behind the bench," said New Jersey coach Brent Sutter, a former Islander. "I won't make any other comment. It wasn't any of the players."
The unusual call even caught Islanders coach Ted Nolan by surprise.
"I had no idea," he said. "I was just trying to figure out who was going out for the power play. Good for us, bad for them."
The club operated patiently and scored at 6:25, when Satan - who was stationed to the right of the net - converted a cross-crease pass by Trent Hunter from below the left faceoff circle.
"No matter who is in goal, it's difficult to stop pucks 5-on-3," Sutter said.
Brodeur, who also made 20 saves, was trying to become just the second goalie in NHL history to reach the 500-win plateau. Hall of Famer Patrick Roy is the all-time leader with 551 victories.
"It's a big number," Brodeur admitted. "It'll be a great thing, when I get there. It's because of longevity and because I've played with a pretty good team all this time."
The reigning Vezina Trophy winner, Brodeur played in his 905th game, while Roy reached 500 in his 933rd career appearance.
Brodeur has 38 wins against the Islanders and had won his last six starts against them. But he ran into a team with an efficient defense that allowed just 11 shots over the first two periods.
Vasicek opened the scoring at 17:13 of the first. Richard Park circled around the back of the net and passed to defenseman Chris Campoli, whose slap shot from the left circle was stopped by Brodeur.
Vasicek poked in the rebound for his fifth goal of the season.
The Devils finally tied it 70 seconds into the third period, when Zubrus whacked a bouncing puck past DiPietro for his third tally in two games.
The Islanders had the better of the scoring chances through the first two periods. Brodeur kept it at 1-0 with a kick save on Hunter with 13 1/2 minutes left in the second and a nice glove stop on Park with six minutes to go in the period.
DiPietro made a key stop on a backhander by Zubrus 90 seconds into the second and a kick save on Brian Gionta with five minutes left in the session.
Islanders captain Bill Guerin was hit above the eye with a puck in the first period. He returned in the second but left for good after two shifts.
"He's feeling OK, but anytime you're messing with the eye, you want to be cautious," Nolan said.
The Islanders went 1-for-4 with the man advantage, while the Devils did not receive a power-play opportunity.
