Blackhawks continue mastery of Red Wings

Nov 12, 2007 - 3:59 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Blackhawks apparently have the Detroit Red Wings' number this season.

Yanic Perreault, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews scored goals as the Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2, on Sunday in a battle of "Original Six" teams.

The Blackhawks defeated the Red Wings for the third time this season, twice in regulation and once in overtime. Detroit is 13-1-0 against the rest of the NHL this season.

"We are a much better team now than we have been in the past," Blackhawks coach Denis Savard said. "Tonight we got an outstanding effort from everyone and our special teams really stepped up too."

Detroit also saw its nine-game winning streak snapped, and former Red Wing Robert Lang played a pronounced role in his old team's undoing.

With 7:32 remaining in the first period, Lang skated around the back of the net before finding Perreault in the slot. The 36-year-old Perreault beat goaltender Chris Osgood just inside the right post to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead.

It was Perreault's third goal of the season.

"We got off to a great start," Lang said. "Then we had to hold them off at the end. It's hard to come back against any team when you are two goals down. It's been a great luxury for us to start off the last few games and get a lead."

Chicago doubled its lead on a 5-on-3 power play just 2 1/2 minutes later.

Stationed in the left corner, Lang fed Kane on the doorstep. The first overall pick of 2007 draft, Kane tapped the puck into the net for his seventh goal of the season.

"Goals don't get much easier than that one," Kane said. "(Lang) took his time and just fed me a great pass, all I had to do was tap it in."

Kane leads all NHL rookies with 21 points.

Jiri Hudler halved the deficit for Detroit with 3:50 remaining in the second period.

With Tomas Kopecky gaining control of the puck behind the net, Hudler came off the bench and slowly skated his way into the slot.

Kopecky then fed Hudler, who wristed a shot past goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin and just under the crossbar for his fourth goal in his last six games and his fifth this season.

"Most nights I can say that we had great efforts from at least 15 guys," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "Tonight, we had good efforts from Hudler and Kopecky. From the rest of the crew coaches included, we weren't as good as we needed to be."

Henrik Zetterberg assisted on the goal to extend his consecutive points streak to 17 games.

Toews regained Chicago's two-goal advantage just 2:15 later with a power-play goal.

"If you keep shooting the puck, one of them is bound to go in," Toews said. "It was nice to find the net and get two points against a team that is rolling like Detroit."

Former Red Wing Jason Williams found Toews alone at the top of the right faceoff circle. The 19-year-old unleashed a wrist shot over the glove of Osgood for his seventh goal of the season.

"Toews has a very good shot," Osgood said. "He made a great play putting it past my ear, after he looked like he was going to pass. You don't see that from young players."

Osgood made 24 saves but suffered his first loss of the season for Detroit.

Khabibulin stopped 30 shots for Chicago.

"Khabibulin was outstanding," Savard said. "He kept us in the game and made some big saves."
