Brown's shootout goal lifts Kings past Sharks

SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Kings appear to enjoy playing the San Jose Sharks.

Dustin Brown scored in the third round of a shootout to give the Kings a 3-2 triumph over the Sharks on Wednesday night.

Anze Kopitar and Patrick O'Sullivan each tallied in regulation as Los Angeles won its second straight against San Jose and third in four meetings this season.

"We know we have to come out hard against these guys. We've played three games here (in San Jose) and we've won all three of them," O'Sullivan said. "It's a tough building to play in and it can be really intimidating with the fans and how loud they are.

"But I think the key is, when we have a good start, it keeps the crowd down and silent, and we were able to do that tonight."

With the shootout tied at 2-2, Brown took an aggressive path directly toward goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, ripping a shot between his pads to lift the Kings to victory.

"Tonight, I totally switched it up from what I thought I was trying to do," Brown said. "I put a quick move to the left and put a little (shot) on him, which he struggled with.

"Shootouts are exciting for the fans and the players. It's a matter of bearing down, and we capitalized on all three (shots)."

The Sharks rallied from a one-goal deficit in the third period to force overtime. After numerous opportunities on the power play, San Jose finally tied the game at 2-2 on the man advantage at 3:41 of the period.

Defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh fired a shot that was stopped by netminder Jason LaBarbera. However, the rebound went directly to fellow blue-liner Craig Rivet, who wristed it into a vacant net from the left faceoff circle to knot the contest.

"Goals are being scored now in front of the net," Rivet said. "The goaltenders in this league, you have to give them all the credit in the world. What they see, they will stop. We need to get more traffic in front of the net."

The Kings had taken the lead with less than three minutes to play in the second period. Former Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart picked up the puck at the blue line after Mike Grier failed to clear the zone and, from the top of the right circle, passed to O'Sullivan, who tipped it in from the left side of the crease to give the Los Angeles a 2-1 edge.

"With (top scorers Michael Cammalleri and Alexander Frolov) not playing, me and (Kopitar and Brown) were going to be relied upon a little bit more," O'Sullivan said. "We're missing two of our best players, needless to say, so I think all three of us took it upon ourselves to try and have the best game that we could.

"This team is bigger than us, for sure, and we have to compete at their level. We definitely did that tonight, and that's the major reason we came out of here with a win."

San Jose opened the scoring early in the first period when Joe Thornton, the team's leading scorer, ripped a one-timer from the right circle that beat LaBarbera to the stick side at 3:58 as Milan Michalek set a perfect screen in front.

The Kings evened it at 1-1 midway through the second period. While the Sharks were on the power play, defenseman Doug Murray lost the puck just after a faceoff in his own zone. Brown grabbed it and skated in on a breakaway but was denied by Nabokov.

However, the Sharks goaltender lost sight of the puck, which was right at his feet, and Kopitar simply punched it in at 10:39 for the Kings' third shorthanded tally of the season.

The Kings struggled to get an attack going at the start and allowed the first nine shots before registering their first with 7:50 remaining in the opening period.

However, San Jose had just one goal to show for their early dominance and trailed after two periods.

"You try too hard and it gets a little frustrating," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "You keep the game as simple as you can. I don't know if (when) we came into the game, we thought we were going to win 5- or 6-0. ... Don't change what gave us the lead, and in the second period, we did."
