Ward, Hurricanes thwart Rangers

NEW YORK (Ticker) - After an ugly goaltending performance, it was quite the turnaround for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Cam Ward made 28 saves and Cory Stillman scored two goals to lead the Hurricanes to a 4-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday night.

The Hurricanes improved to 1-1-0 on a five-game road trip and also won for just the fourth time in their last 10 (4-6-0). They did so after John Grahame allowed eight goals on 25 shots in an 8-1 loss against the Buffalo Sabres.

"We needed to rebound," Stillman said. "We got an effort from everybody and that was the difference. We played a smart game."

"I think it's how you respond to those situations is what really matters," Ward said. "Obviously things didn't go well in Buffalo but we did a good job of leaving that result in Buffalo and once we got into New York it was like a new mind-set."

Ward had a quiet first period as he faced just seven shots, including none in the first six-plus minutes. He had a two-goal lead to work with after Scott Walker scored 5:22 into the contest and Stillman tallied with 16 seconds remaining in the first.

"I think the big thing is that we started off right," Ward said. "You look at our first period, I think that's probably one of the best first periods we had in an extremely long time. It set us up for the rest of the night."

Carolina made it a three-goal lead midway through the third when defenseman David Tanabe scored.

Stillman capped the scoring late in the third for Carolina, which has scored four goals in its last three victories.

Ward made 11 more saves in the second, including several key stops. He made a blocker save on Scott Gomez less than 90 seconds in, twice denied Chris Drury on point-blank opportunities and then made a glove save on Jaromir Jagr with 10:17 remaining before stopping Martin Straka's stuff attempt.

"Cam played fantastic tonight," said Hurricanes center Matt Cullen, who had two assists. "It's one of those things when you're struggling like that, you need your goalie to step up and have a huge effort and he did it."

Ward made 10 more saves in the third and also caught a break when Drury's wrister went off the post with 14:33 remaining. He finished with his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career.

"He made some big saves for us, especially on the penalty kill and a couple of times even strength," Carolina defenseman Glen Wesley said. "But you need those saves at key moments in games and he made a couple of big stops for us, especially to help us hold on to the lead and we just continued to gain confidence as the game went on."

The Rangers, who failed to win their third in a row, were shut out for the fourth time this season and failed to move into tie with the Ottawa Senators for first place in the Eastern Conference.

The loss also came after New York scored three times in the first period en route to a 5-2 win at Ottawa on Saturday. It also was the Rangers first four-goal defeat since a 9-2 loss in Toronto last December 16.

"There was really nothing good about this one," New York right wing Brendan Shanahan said. "It was a real stinker."

Carolina opened the scoring when Brandon Dubinsky committed a turnover in the defensive zone and Walker finished off the play by streaking through the slot and sliding it past goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

After the Hurricanes killed off a late power-play, they scored a crucial late goal when Stillman banked it past a Rangers defender. The goal was initially credited to Cullen but changed late in the third period.

"The start was important, but they got a better start and kept going after that," Lundqvist said.

After Ward withstood the flurry in the second, the Hurricanes sealed the win with two goals less than two minutes apart.

Tanabe scored on a breakaway after a loose puck caromed off Jagr's skate in the neutral zone, and Stillman capped his third two-goal game of the season by putting a backhander past Lundqvist.

"Tonight it wasn't there," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "There was not a synapse between the brain and the feet."
