McLean's late goal helps Panthers edge Hurricanes

Dec 21, 2007 - 4:50 AM
SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- Brett McLean and the Florida Panthers inched closer to the top of the Southeast Division.

McLean scored the game-winning goal with just under seven minutes remaining in the third period as the Panthers posted a 5-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday.

Captain Olli Jokinen had a goal and set up another and Radek Dvorak, Jozef Stumpel and Stephen Weiss also scored for Florida (17-16-2), which moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

"We've been in this position a couple of times this season and had a chance to move up in the standings and haven't played our best hockey," McLean said. "It was nice after the first period to play the kind of hockey we need to be successful for those last 40 minutes."

The Panthers also closed to within three points of Carolina for first place in the division.

"You don't want to get too comfortable here," Jokinen said. "Being three points behind with one game in hand, every game means something. We're a confident group right now. It's been a long time since we've been over .500. I don't remember when. There's no reason for us to stop now."

With the score knotted at 4-4 in the final session, McLean skated in around the net, whirled around and wrapped a shot that glanced off Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason before going past goaltender John Grahame with 6:54 remaining.

"It's pretty much all I could hope for," McLean said. "I know Richard Zednik really goes to the net well in situations like that, so I was hoping for him to get a tip. I don't know what it hit, but I'm happy it did."

It was McLean's second goal in as many games and his third point in the last three since returning from a broken right wrist which sidelined him for 15 contests.

"There were a couple of 'miniature golf' goals like McLean's tonight," Grahame said. "It seems like they had the bounces going for them."

Dvorak opened the scoring five minutes into the game before Andrew Ladd, Erik Cole and Cory Stillman put the Hurricanes ahead, 3-1, after the first period.

"We had some chances," Stillman said. "We did! And that was the difference. We let them hang in there.

"When you have the opportunity to score, you need to score. You need to capitalize and bury them. If you let them hang on, they're going to come back and score."

Goals by Jokinen and Stumpel in the second period and another by Weiss 4:10 into the third gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead, but Ray Whitney's tally just 29 seconds later leveled the game again.

Tomas Vokoun stopped 29 shots for Florida, which won for just the second time in 12 games against Carolina.

"Obviously, we didn't have a good start," Vokoun said. "We were down, 3-1, and that makes this an even bigger win confidence-wise. We were able to overcome a two-goal deficit, we played hard and did everything."

Grahame made 36 saves for the Hurricanes, who saw their modest two-game winning streak end.

"We knew this game was marked on their calender," Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette said. "We talked about it and knew they'd be ready to play. Florida is on a little bit of a roll right now."
