Brown's overtime goal helps Kings edge Blackhawks
Dec 31, 2007 - 4:45 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Dustin Brown and the Los Angeles Kings accomplished a task they had not done in over two months.Brown scored the second of his two goals in overtime as the Kings rallied to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-2, on Sunday.
Kyle Calder had a power-play goal and defenseman Tom Preissing assisted on two scores, including the game-winner, for Los Angeles, which has won back-to-back games for the first time since October 25-27.
"I am pleased for our guys that we came back the way we did," Kings coach Marc Crawford said. "Brown had to make two good shots to get those goals, hopefully we can build on this win."
The Kings had been on an eight-game losing streak before snapped it with a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.
"It's nice to end this year with two good wins," Calder said. "Now we go home for six in a row and we have to capitalize on that."
Los Angeles used nearly the entire length of the ice in the extra session to put this one away.
After a turnover by Chicago in the Los Angeles zone, Preissing fed Brown with a quick pass, who proceeded to race up the ice. The left wing, on a 2-on-2 situation, hurtled in before pushing the puck past goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin for the game-winner with 89 seconds left.
"I just made a power move to the net," Brown said. "When I got in tight I just tried to make a one quick move and get it past him."
It was Brown's team-leading 18th goal of the season - one better than his career high total of last season.
Los Angeles had trailed by two goals after Chicago rookie Jacob Dowell netted his second goal of the year at the 2:10 mark of the third period.
"With a 2-0 lead you would think it's good enough to win," Blackhawks coach Denis Savard said. "I can't fault the effort. We just made two mistakes and the puck was in our net."
However, 33 seconds later, Brown stole a pass in his own zone and skated in on a 2-on-1 before lifting a wrister into the upper lefthanded corner of the net, halving the Kings' deficit.
"My first goal was a good shot," Brown said. "I thought (Khabibulin) was cheating a little but I still got it in the corner."
Calder knotted the score when he banged in a rebound after Preissing's shot from the right point was knocked back by the pad of Khabibulin at 7:29 of the third.
"It's always nice to comeback here," Calder said. "I have played well against them before. Tonight it's a case of sticking to our game plan and things worked out."
Jason LaBarbera stopped 30 shots for Los Angeles, which trailed after two periods for the second night in a row.
Khabibulin made 33 saves for Chicago, which had won four of its last five vs. Los Angeles.
"Every time we play at home we want to win," Khabibulin said. "Tonight that didn't happen. When you go up two goals late you expect to win."
