Zetterberg stalls Canucks' comeback

Jan 18, 2008 - 5:38 AM
DETROIT (Ticker) -- Henrik Zetterberg and Dominik Hasek stopped the bleeding for the Detroit Red Wings.

Zetterberg scored the decisive goal in the shootout and Hasek denied all three opposing shooters as the Red Wings held back the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2, on Thursday.

Daniel Cleary tallied twice in regulation for Detroit, which had lost its previous three games and squandered a two-goal lead in this one.

"We have too many good players to have this keep up," Cleary said of his team's losing ways.

After neither team was able to snap a 2-2 tie after two periods, the game was forced to a shootout. Both Red Wings All-Star Pavel Datsyuk and Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler failed to convert in the first round, setting the stage for Zetterberg.

Also an All-Star, the Swede deked Roberto Luongo before backhanding the puck between the goaltender's pads to give Detroit the edge.

"I could have gone either high or low, and he opened the five-hole," Zetterberg said.

Luongo credited Zetterberg for his decision.

"It was a simple yet brilliant play," said the netminder, who was selected as a starter but will skip the All-Star Game in order to be with his pregnant wife. "He carried in on his forehand, went to the backhand, waited for an opening and put it through the five-hole."

It was all Hasek needed, as the six-time Vezina Trophy winner stopped Trevor Linden's shot before getting his glove on Taylor Pyatt's wrister to clinch the win.

While the victory was welcome, Detroit coach Mike Babcock was not concerned with his club's slide.

"You have to go through that at times during the season," he said. "If you don't have some tough times, you won't know how to deal with them during the playoffs."

Cleary opened the scoring with 1:44 remaining in the first period, when he deflected defenseman Andreas Lilja's one-timer from the left point past Luongo. The 29-year-old capped his second two-goal effort of the season just 1:51 into the second session, redirecting Valtteri Filppula's pass by Luongo from the low slot for a 2-0 advantage.

"I've been playing well and I've been playing with good players," said Cleary, who has netted six goals in his last eight games. "I've tried to get in front of the net. I shoot when I've got a chance and I go to the net when I've got the chance."

Vancouver, which had lost three of its previous four games, battled back to forge a tie before the second intermission.

"For the first 20 minutes, they gave us a lesson in how to generate offense," Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said. "They do it constantly. That's why they're the best team in the league. They'll shoot from anywhere. For half a game, we played well, so we'll take the point."

Henrik Sedin buried a loose puck from the right faceoff circle at 15:21 and captain Markus Naslund, who was playing in his 1,000th career game, fired a shot from the right faceoff circle that caromed off the skate of defenseman Brian Rafalski and past Hasek with 1:52 remaining in the period.

"The last five or 10 minutes of the second period, we made some mistakes and they got some speed going," Hasek said. "We hit a crossbar and then they get that lucky goal. Except for that, I think we dominated the game."

Hasek finished with 26 saves for the Red Wings, who improved to 3-0-0 against the Canucks this season.

Sedin added an assist and Luongo stopped 47 shots for Vancouver.
