Second-period flurry helps Devils double up Kings
Feb 3, 2008 - 4:57 AM NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Devils benefited from a four-goal second period and cruised to a 6-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.Defenseman Colin White, Travis Zajac, Sergei Brylin and David Clarkson recorded a goal and an assist apiece for the Devils, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Patrik Elias and blue-liner Karel Rachunek also tallied for New Jersey, which earned its first victory at home since defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2, in a shootout on January 20.
"It was what we needed," Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner said. "Now we can maybe take a breather, get ourselves focused for (Monday's game against) Pittsburgh and come out and start playing the way we're capable of."
Defenseman Brian Boyle, who was recalled earlier in the day from Manchester of the American Hockey League, scored his first career goal and added an assist for the Kings.
"It was kind of a roller-coaster day," Boyle said. "I had to get all my things together and eventually got down here. I had to stretch out on the ice as quickly as I could."
Clarkson opened the scoring just 4:43 into the game.
Carrying the puck into the offensive zone, Clarkson used Los Angeles defenseman Brad Stuart as a screen before wristing a shot between the pads of goaltender Jason LaBarbera for his sixth goal of the season.
Elias doubled the advantage 2 1/2 minutes into the second period after accepting a feed from Brian Gionta and beating LaBarbera for his 15th tally.
"We had a good shift, the whole line, and had pretty good pressure on them," Elias said. "We were patient, cycled the puck and got a good shot off on the net. Brian got a loose puck there in the corner and made a nice play from behind the net.
"Tonight, for a change, we got openings and we could put the puck in. And that was the difference for us."
Boyle halved the deficit six minutes later, beating netminder Martin Brodeur from the slot at 8:38 of the second period.
"It was pretty neat scoring," Boyle said. "I'm just trying to take it all in still. It's nice to score, but you want to win."
Rachunek regained the Devils' two-goal lead just 75 seconds later by scoring for the first time since November 17 at Philadelphia. Rachunek accepted a feed from Langenbrunner and beat LaBarbera to give the Devils a 3-1 bulge.
"It was a good play by (Dainius Zubrus)," Langenbrunner said. "Zubie was strong on the puck all night, cycling the puck. Karel, he's pretty good at jumping into open spots there and (got) a good shot."
Boyle again had a hand in halving the deficit, this time feeding rookie defenseman Jack Johnson, who also beat Brodeur from the slot for his third goal.
White scored his first of the season to give New Jersey a 4-2 lead just 33 seconds later, blasting a shot from the left faceoff circle past LaBarbera.
"It was a long slump there," White said. "It was definitely nice and I'll enjoy it, for sure. I think one of the keys to our game was, we didn't let anything bother us. We didn't let anything rattle us, we stayed focused and we just went out there and played every shift."
"We didn't let it get to us," Elias said of the Kings' second goal. "We got right back on it and were able to answer."
Zajac increased the Devils' lead to three with five seconds remaining in the second period, effectively ending the night for LaBarbera, who finished with 19 saves.
"We made it 3-2, it was close, and then they got that one off the faceoff," LaBarbera said. "Obviously, getting one late is not ideal. You never want to give up one in the last minute."
Jean-Sebastien Aubin played the third period for the Kings, stopping two of the three shots he faced.
Defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky scored with five minutes remaining for Los Angeles, but Brylin tallied under two minutes later to seal the win.
