Carter nets pair as Flyers top Lightning

Mar 7, 2008 - 5:08 AM
PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Jeff Carter scored two goals - including the game-winner with under two minutes to play in the third period - as the Philadelphia Flyers skated to a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.

After missing the previous game with a slight shoulder strain, Daniel Briere also tallied for the eighth-place Flyers (34-26-8), who moved three points ahead of the idle Buffalo Sabres (32-27-9) in the Eastern Conference.

The victory also was Philadelphia's first in nine home meetings with Tampa Bay.

"You look at where we are right now in the standings, we need to get the points against the lower-seeded teams," Carter said. "Tampa is a great team. You've got to shut down the top line. It was a do-or-die game, and we needed it."

Jussi Jokinen and Michel Ouellet scored for the struggling Lightning, who fell to 1-7-1 in their last nine games.

"It's been like that pretty much all year," Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle said. "Our third periods have been very bad. We did create a lot of chances, but those goals won't go in."

With the contest tied at 2-2 and 1:54 remaining in the third period, Carter corralled the puck and skated just inside the blue line before wristing a shot that deflected off the leg of Tampa Bay defenseman Shane O'Brien and past goaltender Mike Smith.

"It was a tough play as their defense jumped in there," Carter said. "I just (got the puck) and beat the guy to the middle. I just put it on the net, and it had eyes."

"It was a tough goal, a backbreaker with two minutes left," Smith said. "It went through a lot of bodies and I didn't get a good read on it off of his stick, and it's in the back of the net."

The tally was Carter's second of the game and career-high 25th of the season. It also completed the seventh multi-goal effort of his career and second in three contests.

"I've never been in a situation where you're relied upon," Carter said. "The more I play, the better I feel, so it's been good."

Jokinen opened the scoring 31 seconds into the first period, gathering a loose puck on the doorstep and wristing it into the net for his 15th goal of the season and first with the Lightning.

Briere leveled the contest with 5:09 remaining in the first. After knocking down an attempted clearing pass in the neutral zone, R.J. Umberger skated over the blue line and fed Briere, who wristed the puck past Smith for his 23rd of the campaign.

Inked to an eight-year, $52 million contract as a free agent last summer, Briere returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday's loss to Buffalo with a shoulder injury.

"We have so many guys out right now that I wanted to get back," Briere said. "If I could come in there and provide a little spark and help us get a point or two, that's all I was looking for."

"Just the fact that he wanted to come back, I think, was a big boost for our hockey team," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "He does a lot of great things out there. He settled the power play down and he scores a goal. Those are the things that we want to see out of one of our leaders."

Carter gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead less than two minutes later, backhanding the puck just under the crossbar.

Ouellet drew Tampa Bay even at 8:18 of the middle period, accepting a feed from Jokinen in the slot and wristing the puck past netminder Martin Biron for his fourth goal in his last six games.
