Cogliano nets pair as Oilers tip Blackhawks
Mar 9, 2008 - 11:29 PM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Rookie Andrew Cogliano scored his second goal of the game just over three minutes into overtime as the Edmonton Oilers skated to a 6-5 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.Dustin Penner, Curtis Glencross, Robert Nilsson and Marty Reasoner also tallied for Edmonton, which is 6-1-0 in its last seven games.
Robert Lang had a goal and two assists and Patrick Sharp, Jason Williams and defensemen Duncan Keith and Dustin Byfuglien also tallied for Chicago, which fell to 10-5-1 in its last 16 games.
With the game tied at 5-5 just 3:01 into overtime, Cogliano and Nilsson exchanged the puck before the rookie raced in on net and tipped the puck past Patrick Lalime for his 15th goal of the season.
"I just got the puck deep in our zone and broke out to center ice," Cogliano said. "I made a pass to Nilsson, who put it back to me on my stick. I just had to tip it in."
"Somebody said last goal wins and it was one of those games," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "I thought we had good energy and this is a good win for us.
The tally capped a wild game which saw neither club gain as much as a two-goal advantage at any point of the contest.
"We got a point, but this is a game that we wanted two," Blackhawks coach Denis Savard said. "The teams ahead us, we have them coming up. It's a new week tomorrow."
After Cogliano scored his first goal of the game to give Edmonton a 5-4 lead late in the third period, Byfuglien corralled his own rebound and beat Mathieu Garon with 4:35 remaining in the session.
"I knew this one was going to count," Byfuglien said after Chicago had a late equalizer on Friday against San Jose overturned by replay. "Even though this went to replay as well, I knew it was a good goal."
After Penner opened the scoring just 2:52 into the first period with a power-play tally, Sharp leveled the game nearly five minutes later by blasting a shot just inside the left goalpost for his 34th tally of the season and 10th in his last 16 games.
"This one hurts a little bit, but we did enough to gain in the playoff race," Sharp said. "It was a nice to see how we battled back, I think we just had a couple of breakdowns and we were a little bit unlucky today."
Keith then gave Chicago the lead by scoring with the man advantage 8:22 into the second period, but Glencross pulled Edmonton even just under two minutes later.
Williams regained the Blackhawks' advantage under two minutes later, but Nilsson took advantage of a defensive lapse and wristed the puck past Lalime for his ninth of the season.
"We know how big every game and every goal is right now," Oilers rookie Sam Gagner said. "All through the lineup, everyone is working hard and we have to keep that going."
Reasoner gave Edmonton a 4-3 lead 99 seconds into the third period by wristing a shot past Lalime, but Lang leveled the contest under two minutes later with a slap shot just inside the left post.
