Jokinen, Zednik help Panthers down Flames

CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Olli Jokinen and Richard Zednik helped the Florida Panthers overcome an excellent performance by Calgary Flames rookie goaltender Matt Keetley on Sunday.

Jokinen and Zednik each scored as the Florida Panthers defeated the Calgary Flames, 3-0, in a preseason matchup. Jokinen stuffed in a rebound off Rulan Salei's shot at 11:45 of the opening period to give the Panthers an early 1-0 edge.

In the third, Zednik converted a shorthanded two-on-one situation with Jokinen. After scoring, Zednik crashed into the end boards and did not return to the game. There was no immediate word on his condition.

The night, however, belonged to Calgary's rookie goaltender. Keetley was thrust into the starting role after scheduled starter Curtis McElhinney was scratched just minutes before game time after suffering an injury in warmups. Keetley made the most of his opportunity. He robbed Jokinen several times, including a breakaway late in the second period.

Jokinen stepped out of the penalty box and picked up a loose puck near the center circle. He moved and made a deke but Keetley stuck out the right pad to stop the backhanded shot attempt.

Keetley, a fifth-round choice of Calgary in 2005, also robbed Florida's Anthony Stewart on a partial breakaway in the second period. Keetley's play overshadowed Florida's Tomas Vokoun, who was acquired in a major offseason trade with Nashville, played just over half the game. He faced just 10 shots.

Craig Anderson finished the game steering away 16 shots to record the combination shutout.

Corey Murphy added another goal in the third period to cap the scoring.

The game marked the return of Mike Keenan to the NHL coaching ranks. Keenan spent five seasons with the Panthers as coach and general manager.
