Stastny's two goals lifts Avalanche in thriller

Sep 18, 2007 - 5:18 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Coyotes fans were treated to an exciting game but Paul Stastny ensured they would not be celebrating a win.

Stastny scored with just 47 seconds left in overtime - one of his two goals - to propel the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 triumph over the Coyotes on Monday in a preseason matchup.

After notching 28 goals as a rookie last season, the 21-year-old Stastny tallied his second goal of the night in the extra session on Phoenix goaltender David LeNeveu, who replaced starter Mikael Tellqvist midway through the second period.

Stastny also scored in the second - one of the five combined goals in the period - to give the Avalanche their first lead of the game at 2-1.

Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski scored with less than a second remaining in regulation when they pulled the goalie for an extra attacker.

Derek Morris capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play advantage, scoring against former team to put the Coyotes up 1-0 less than three minutes into the second session. The Avalanche responded less than three minutes later when Marek Svatos also scored on a 5-on-3 power play to tie the game.
