Gerber strong in net, Senators shut out Flyers

Sep 19, 2007 - 3:30 AM LONDON, Ontario (Ticker) -- Goaltender Martin Gerber turned aside all 52 shots he faced as the Ottawa Senators shut out the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-0, on Tuesday.

Rookie Nick Foligno had a goal and two assists and Patrick Eaves also scored and added a helper for Ottawa, which won its first preseason game.

Defenseman Andrej Meszaro added a power-play goal that gave the Senators a 3-0, first-period lead.

A first-period goal by Ilja Zubov at the 7:37 mark was all the scoring Gerber would need. The 33-year old Swiss, who was 15-9-3 for the Senators last season, stopped 14 shots in the first, 23 in the second and 15 in the third. The four-year veteran is vying for the backup goaltender position behind Ray Emery.

Meszaro scored on the power-play with 3:46 left in the first session, before Foligno also tallied with a man-advantage with just 44 seconds left in the period.

All three goals came against Antero Niittymaki, who stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced through two sessions. Brian Boucher started the final period in net for Philadelphia, surrendering a goal to Eaves midway through the session.

The Flyers, who were 0-for-7 on the power play, fall to 1-1 in the preseason.
