Carcillo scores twice as Coyotes top Maple Leafs

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Daniel Carcillo was too much for the Toronto Maple Leafs to handle. Carcillo scored a pair of goals and Radim Vrbata added two assists as the Phoenix Coyotes edged the Maple Leafs, 3-2, in a preseason contest on Thursday.

The victory came one day after Toronto posted an indentical 3-2 triumph over Phoenix in Winnipeg.

Former Toronto goaltender Mikael Tellqvist got the start for Phoenix and was solid in picking up the win. He made 30 saves, including a stop on Matt Stajan during a shorthanded breakaway in the second period.

Carcillo opened the scoring for the Coyotes at 3:24 of the first period. With Phoenix holding a 2-1 edge in the second, the 22-year-old put the rebound of his own shot from the slot past netminder Vesa Toskala during a power play with 8:17 to go, increasing the lead to two goals.

Toskala started his first game as a Maple Leaf, allowing three goals on 28 shots. The Finn was acquired from San Jose during the summer and is vying to replace Andrew Raycroft as Toronto's No. 1 goalie.

Tony Salmelainen scored the first goal for the Maple Leafs, beating Tellqvist with a blast from the right faceoff circle at 4:46 of the first period. Darcy Tucker drew Toronto within 3-2 midway through the third with a power-play tally.
