Rangers edge Devils; Weekes injured

Sep 22, 2007 - 1:42 AM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The Parise brothers did their best, but they were unable to keep the New York Rangers from posting a victory.

Ryan Callahan had a goal and an assist and Brandon Dubinsky and defenseman Daniel Girardi each set up a pair of tallies as the Rangers skated to a 4-3 preseason triumph over the Devils on Friday.

Forced into action early in the first period due to an injury to former New York goaltender Kevin Weekes, Jordan Parise played well, stopping 22 of the 25 shots he faced. Younger brother Zach Parise contributed offensively for the Devils, scoring late in the second period to cut his team's deficit to 4-2.

Brian Gionta - who also had an assist - tallied with 6 1/2 minutes remaining in the third, but it was not enough as Stephen Valiquette shut the door to preserve the win.

At 6:06 of the opening session, New York's Sean Avery shoved New Jersey defenseman Johnny Oduya into Weekes, who fell backward and appeared to hit his upper back on the right goalpost. After remaining down on the ice and being attended to by team trainers, the netminder was helped to the locker room.

Jordan Parise replaced Weekes, who had allowed a power-play goal by Dane Byers just 1:53 into the contest.

Blair Betts and Martin Straka also scored and Al Montoya yielded just one goal on 13 shots for the Rangers. Valiquette entered midway through the second period and made 12 saves.
