Chelios powers Red Wings to overtime exhibition win

Sep 22, 2007 - 2:40 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Defenseman Chris Chelios is ready for his 24th NHL season.

The 45-year-old Chelios scored with 78 seconds remaining in overtime, giving the Detroit Red Wings a 1-0 exhibition victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

A three-time Norris Trophy winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion who had appeared in 1,476 NHL games, Chelios signed a one-year contract with the Red Wings in May, returning to the league for a 24th campaign. He proved he is prepared even at his advanced age, sailing a one-timer from the left faceoff circle past Pittsburgh goaltender Ty Conklin with time winding down in the extra session for the contest's only goal.

Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom recorded assists on the tally.

Chris Osgood played the first two periods in net for Detroit and made 16 saves. Jimmy Howard stopped all three shots he faced in the third.

Conklin made 22 saves for the Penguins.

Reigning Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg and six-time Vezina Trophy recipient Dominik Hasek were rested by the Red Wings, while defenseman Brian Rafalski - who signed as a free agent over the summer - missed his second consecutive game with a hip flexor.

Pittsburgh sat out reigning Art Ross and Hart Trophy winner Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who won the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie last season.

Much anticipated Red Wings prospect Igor Grigorenko made his home debut and continued his lackluster training camp, attempting just one shot while playing just over 10 minutes.

The team's second-round pick in 2001 who has recovered from a near-fatal auto accident in Russia in 2003, came to North America out of shape and has had trouble adjusting to the faster pace of the NHL.
