Zetterberg's two goals send Red Wings to preseason win

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings fielded a watered-down lineup for their preseason game in Pittsburgh on Saturday night. But one star player they dressed was Henrik Zetterberg, who proved the decision was the correct one.

Zetterberg scored two goals and set up two others to lead the Red Wings to a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 26-year-old left wing snapped a 1-1 tie with six-tenths of a second left in the first period, when Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was unable to corral Jiri Hudler's shot, allowing Zetterberg to chip it in.

The teams swapped power-play goals in the final minutes of the third before Zetterberg scored an empty-netter with 66 seconds left to make it 4-2. Just 43 seconds later, Mikael Samuelsson capped the scoring off a feed from Zetterberg.

Detroit, which posted a 1-0 overtime victory over Pittsburgh at home on Friday, did not dress top players such as Pavel Datsyuk, Tomas Holmstrom and defensemen Chris Chelios and Brian Rafalski.

The majority of the Penguins' regular lineup played, with the exception of Petr Sykora, Ryan Malone and Jarkko Ruutu.

Sykora, an offseason free-agent signing from the Edmonton Oilers, suffered a broken nose in a preseason game against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday. He is expected to be sidelined for a week.

Samuelsson had a goal and three assists and Hudler set up two tallies for Detroit, which improved to 3-1 in the preseason.

Defenseman Mark Eaton and Evgeni Malkin scored power-play goals and reigning Hart Trophy winner Sidney Crosby added two assists for the Penguins, who fell to 1-1-2.

Eaton's goal came on the power play with 9:55 to play in the first. But Kris Draper ultimately was awarded the equalizer midway through the second, when the rebound of Johan Ryno's shot deflected in off his thigh.

The official scorers originally credited Ryno with the goal.
