Tempers flare as Comrie leads Islanders over Rangers

Sep 25, 2007 - 2:40 AM UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Rangers and New York Islanders had some regular-season intensity on Monday night.

Mike Comrie scored two goals, including the game-winning tally in overtime, as the Islanders erased a three-goal deficit en route to a 5-4 victory over the Rangers in a fight-marred contest.

Bill Guerin had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who scored three times on the power play, including twice in the second period to secure the victory.

A total of six players - three from each team - were ejected.

The game featured eight major fights in the first two periods, leading to the ejections of netminders Rick DiPietro of the Islanders and Al Montoya of the Rangers, who hit the dressing room early thanks to some escalating hostilities.

In a second-period brawl, which involved all 12 players on the ice, the Rangers' Colton Orr and Jason Strudwick joined the Islanders' Chris Simon and Kip Brennan in earning early visits to the showers.

Simon was permitted to play despite a continuing 21-game suspension for a vicious hit last season on Ryan Hollweg. Simon was closely shadowed by Hollweg and his teammates while on the ice and ultimately was goaded into fighting.

Comrie tallied on the power play just three minutes into the extra session, netting the puck off a feed from Guerin to snap a 4-4 tie. He also scored with the extra skater just before the end of the second session cut his team's deficit to two.

Guerin then scored another power-play tally just 22 seconds later to make it 4-3. Josef Vasicek tied the game at 9:09 mark of the third period.

Ruslan Fedotenko also scored for the Islanders, who were outshot, 33-24.

Chris Drury had a goal and an assist for the Rangers, who converted two of their six power plays.
