Zetterberg leads balanced attack as Red Wings crush Rangers

Sep 26, 2007 - 2:10 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Henrik Zetterberg had two goals and an assist to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 6-1 victory over the New York Rangers in a preseason matchup Tuesday.

Johan Franzen, Chris Chelios, Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Kopecky each scored goals for the Red Wings, who tallied twice in each period.

Franzen got Detroit on the board just 28 seconds into the game when he put in the rebound of Nicklas Lidstrom's shot for his fourth goal in four games. Chelios made it 2-0 with 7:12 left in the first period, scoring his third goal in three games on a wrist shot from the right point.

Zetterberg got into the act at 5:24 into the second period, when he put in a rebound of Mikael Samuelsson's shot that clanged off the goal post.

Just two minutes later, Detroit capitalized on Marcel Hossa's boarding penalty. Datsyuk put a cross-ice feed from Zetterberg into an empty net for a power-play goal and a 4-0 edge.

Tomas Holmstrom, Samuelsson and Lidstrom each recorded two assists while goaltender Dominik Hasek had 18 saves. Hasek was on his way to a shutout until Scott Gomez found the back of the net with 2:19 remaining.

Defenseman Brian Rafalski, who came from New Jersey in the offseason, made his Red Wings debut and got an assist on Franzen's goal. A native of suburban Detroit, he missed the first five preseason games with a hip flexor injury.

Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist stopped 12 shots.

Detroit's lineup featured all of its regulars, while New York was without former Red Wing Brendan Shanahan, offseason acquisition Chris Drury, Sean Avery and Michal Rozsival.
