Ladd nets shootout winner for Hurricanes

Sep 29, 2007 - 2:17 AM RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Andrew Ladd's goal in the ninth round of the shootout gave the Carolina Hurricanes a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets in a preseason game on Friday.

Ladd's wrist shot beat Columbus goaltender Pascal Leclaire to end a lengthy shootout and a game marred by fighting.

Erik Cole tipped defenseman Mike Commodore's shot past Leclaire with just under four minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game at 1-1.

Columbus opened the scoring when Curtis Glencross gathered a rebound and scored a power-play goal at 18:43 of the second period.

Shortly thereafter, the intensity of the fighting picked up, and with 22.6 seconds to go in the middle session, officials sent the teams to their respective locker rooms.

Cam Ward stopped 37 shots for Carolina, which finished the preseason 4-1-1. The Hurricanes open the regular season at home on Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens.

Leclaire made 20 saves for Columbus, which travels to Nashville for Saturday's exhibition finale before opening its regular season at home against the defending champion Anaheim Ducks on October 5.

Columbus right wing Jakub Voracek left the game in the second period with a bruised thigh and did not return.
