Boyle nets overtime winner as Sharks keep Flyers winless
Oct 19, 2008 - 6:57 AM By Michael Duca PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterSAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Defenseman Dan Boyle scored 85 seconds into overtime as the San Jose Sharks rebounded from their first loss of the season with a 5-4 triumph over the winless Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.
Jonathan Cheechoo and blue-liner Christian Ehrhoff notched a goal and an assist apiece for San Jose, which found its scoring touch after it was shut out by the Anaheim Ducks, 4-0, on Friday.
Joe Pavelski and Devin Setoguchi also scored and Boyle added two assists for the Sharks, who went 1-for-8 on the power play and posted a 45-17 advantage in shots.
"Guys are getting chances, they just were not going in for us," Setoguchi said. "They are bound to go in for us sooner or later if we stick to it. One of these games, you'd better look for an explosion. If we keep playing the way we are, there's going to be a lot of goals going in the net."
Daniel Briere tallied twice and Jeff Carter and defenseman Braydon Coburn also scored for Philadelphia (0-3-2), which joins Tampa Bay (0-2-3) as the only NHL teams without a victory this season.
"I certainly liked the way we competed tonight and the fire that we had, but you get the lead, you should be able to lock it up there," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "I think we tired ourselves out in the second period. Far too many penalties, and you give a team that's got a power play like that enough opportunities, they're going to score. Not only that, it taxes your players too much.
"I really liked the effort tonight. It's just one of those games when you get the lead in the third period, you want to lock it up and put it away."
Flyers captain Mike Richards also saw some positives but admitted the losing streak is bothersome.
"We did some good things, we just didn't find a way to win," Richards said. "It's big-time annoying."
In overtime, Boyle beat goaltender Antero Niittymaki from the doorstep to cap the comeback for the Sharks.
"My goal, I just threw it in on net," Boyle said. "It was a long rebound and (Niittymaki) popped it out and couldn't get it. I was able to jump the defender and I had a good spot there."
"Nice to see him rewarded, first of all," San Jose coach Todd McLellan said. "He's been, I think, pressing as much as anybody on our team right now to provide some offense. He finally got rewarded. He's logged a lot of minutes the last two nights and showed us he has the stamina to do that. He's a very smart, intelligent player."
After Briere's second tally gave the Flyers a 4-3 lead with 8:49 remaining in the third period, Setoguchi leveled the contest just over four minutes later, when he slipped the puck past Niittymaki for his third goal of the season.
Philadelphia opened a 3-1 advantage on Carter's shorthanded tally at 6:48 of the second period, but Cheechoo halved the deficit after redirecting defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic's shot while in the slot with 1:40 remaining in the session.
"I thought we got a little more movement the more power plays we had," Cheechoo said of his goal with the man advantage. "Obviously, they were getting a little bit tired."
San Jose knotted the game at 5:43 of the third, when Pavelski crashed the slot and slapped in a long rebound of a shot by Cheechoo.
