Roenick powers Sharks past winless Flyers

Oct 23, 2008 - 4:17 AM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Jeremy Roenick scored in the second round of the shootout as the San Jose Sharks completed a rare cross-country, home-and-home sweep of the winless Philadelphia Flyers with a 7-6 triumph on Wednesday.

Joe Pavelski, who had a goal and an assist in regulation, also tallied and Evgeni Nabokov made a pair of saves in the bonus format for San Jose, which recorded a 5-4 overtime triumph over Philadelphia at home on Saturday.

Captain Patrick Marleau recorded two tallies and two assists while Devin Setoguchi notched a goal and set up another for the Sharks. Ryane Clowe and defenseman Dan Boyle also scored and Marcel Goc registered two assists for San Jose.

"We've been scoring all over the place. Every line is scoring goals, and that is what kind of wins you games," Pavelski said. "On a night like this, we were able to score six goals, (but) we gave up six as well, which is kind of tough. ... We've won 1-0 games at the same time, so it's nice to know that we can win that way."

Coach Todd McLellan was not as thrilled.

"We weren't very happy with the way we played, with the way we turned the puck over," McLellan said. "To get the points, coaches always have to say we're happy, but deep down, we can't be satisfied with our defensive effort in the last three games."

Joffrey Lupul netted his first two goals of the season and captain Mike Richards and Scottie Upshall both added a tally and an assist for Philadelphia (0-3-3), which remains the lone winless team in the league.

"I get these feelings every once in a while that something good is going to happen," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "I had a feeling we could get it tied up. I really felt like something good was going to happen. I thought (in) overtime, we gave it a good push. I sensed something good was going to happen.

"We just have not had any success in the shootout for whatever reason. It's a tough way to lose a game when you battle back like that, but it's the way the games are decided now. We will take the good and we will move on."

Despite a strong individual effort, Lupul focused on his team's shortcomings after the game.

"That's been what we've talked about since day one, is finding a strong checking game and going on from there, and right now, it's just not happening," Lupul said. "You can't point the finger at anyone. It's forwards, defense, goalies, everyone. It's all of our jobs to get better."

Jeff Carter and Daniel Briere also scored and Scott Hartnell had two assists for the Flyers, whose winless streak against the Sharks was extended to 0-5-2 with two ties. Philadelphia last defeated San Jose on December 21, 2000.

Returning to the City of Brotherly Love to face a franchise with which he played three seasons from 2001-04, Roenick skated up the ice and quickly wristed the puck past goaltender Martin Biron to end the shootout.

"It was awesome. It's just a great feeling to be here," Roenick said. "Even though I'm on the other team, there is still a big part of my heart in the city and for what I've done here and the way that they have treated me. This will most likely be the last time I play in this building. This is one building I will never forget, that's for sure."

With San Jose clinging to a 6-5 lead late in the third period, Marleau was whistled for a holding penalty with 1:52 left. After the Flyers pulled Biron in favor of an extra attacker, Briere leveled the contest with 65 seconds remaining by burying a rebound from in front of a crowded crease.

"We've got to keep working hard," Briere said of the loss. "It's disappointing, the way we thought we finally came back (with) the last couple (goals). They're scoring late goals on us.

"We let them back in the game and they pulled through at the end. I was hoping we would be able to do the same - get rewarded for working so hard to score that late goal, and then send it to overtime, but they won against us again."

Philadelphia recorded the lone two shots of overtime, but Nabokov turned them aside and finished with 23 saves. He also stopped Richards and Briere in the shootout.

Antero Niittymaki surrendered four first-period goals on 15 shots before being relieved by Biron to start the second session. Biron made 18 saves.
