Hansen, Raymond propel Canucks to victory

Oct 26, 2008 - 6:58 AM VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Jannik Hansen and Mason Raymond scored two goals apiece as the Vancouver Canucks recorded a 6-3 triumph over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Kyle Wellwood and Jason Krog also tallied and Ryan Kesler and defenseman Kevin Bieksa each notched two assists for Vancouver, which used a 4-for-6 effort on the power play to help snap a three-game losing streak.

Captain Roberto Luongo made 25 saves and denied Sam Gagner on a penalty shot with 2:12 remaining in the second period to keep the contest tied at 3-3.

"It was a big moment in the game," Luongo said. "It was right up there in the second period, and obviously the score is 4-3 (if they score) and I go into the locker room.

"I wasn't able to make moves as quickly, but I told myself I was going to be as spatial as possible and (Gagner) ended up shooting it the other way. That's why I didn't move much and I was kind of surprised, but at the end, I was able to react."

Robert Nilsson had a goal and an assist and defensemen Denis Grebeshkov and Steve Staios also tallied for Edmonton, which lost for the third straight time after opening the season with four victories.

Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish did not mince words on why he felt his team lost on Saturday.

"We just can't kill a penalty. They're 4-for-6 on the power play and plus-4 on the special teams," MacTavish said. "You can't overcome that, you've got to be able to kill a penalty."

"As much as the power play scored today, the PK cleaned up too," Hansen said.

With the game tied at 3-3, Wellwood gave the Canucks an advantage they would not relinquish.

While on the power play, Wellwood skated in from the left faceoff circle and wristed a shot past goaltender Mathieu Garon and just under the crossbar at 2:32 of the third period.

Hansen added his second tally just over five minutes later and Krog capped the scoring with a power-play goal with 3:14 remaining in the contest.

"There isn't any single thing I can put my finger on (in regard to the power play)," said Raymond, who scored twice with the man advantage. "But when you believe and you all work together and get shots to the net with traffic in front, good things are going to happen."

Oilers defenseman Tom Gilbert was not pleased with his team's performance.

"We weren't blocking shots, we weren't getting rebounds and we didn't help Matty (Garon) out much of the night," Gilbert said.

Garon turned aside 24 shots for the Oilers.
