Kiprusoff helps Flames cool off Avalanche
Oct 29, 2008 - 6:29 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all 22 shots he faced and the Calgary Flames scored three times in the third period to record a 3-0 triumph over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.Curtis Glencross scored at 8:22 of the third to snap a scoreless tie and ignite the Flames.
Rene Bourque and Michael Cammalleri notched a goal and an assist apiece for Calgary, which has won four in a row.
The 2006 Vezina Trophy winner, Kiprusoff stopped 13 shots in the first, seven in the second and two in the third to record his first shutout of the season and 27th career.
Kiprusoff shut down a red-hot Avalanche team that entered fourth in the league with 30 goals.
"They did a good job defensively," Avalanche left wing Ryan Smyth said. "We just didn't generate the stuff we usually do for whatever reason. No excuses. It's a loss."
Peter Budaj stopped 27 shots for Colorado, which saw its five-game winning streak end.
"He's a good goaltender," Calgary center Wayne Primeau said. "You've just got to get pucks to the net, create traffic. What the goalie can't see, he can't save."
Glencross opened the scoring after accepting a feed from David Moss before wristing a shot past Budaj for his first goal of the season.
Bourque doubled the advantage just over 4 1/2 minutes later after he stuffed the puck past Budaj. He then set up Cammalleri, who snapped a wrist shot past the netminder with 4:57 remaining.
It took a while, but the Flames finally cracked Budaj, who entered with a 1.62 goals-against average in his last three games.
"I think we played a good game the first two periods, and the third period they came out real hard," Budaj said. "Their power play gave them some momentum, and they scored a couple goals around the net."
"I thought they were real sharp on their forecheck and they made plays from behind their net," Avalanche coach Tony Granato said. "All three goals came from behind our goal line. For 40 minutes, we played real solid. The last 20, they were obviously the better team."
