Ohlund ends marathon shootout vs. Ducks

Nov 1, 2008 - 7:05 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- After combining for 12 goals in regulation, and seven in the second period alone, both the Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks were firing blanks in the shootout until Mattias Ohlund received his first career opportunity.

Ohlund scored the decisive goal in the 13th round of the shootout, lifting the Canucks to a wild 7-6 triumph over the Ducks on Friday.

Steve Bernier tallied twice in regulation and blue-liner Kevin Bieksa added a goal and two assists for the Canucks, who have won three of four.

Ohlund, Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows also tallied for Vancouver, which overcame a 2-0 deficit with five straight goals but squandered leads of 5-2 and 6-5.

"It was a little sloppy," Ohlund said. "There was some suspect defense from both teams. It was two points for us. We'll take that and move on."

Corey Perry registered a career-high - and franchise record-tying - five points and Teemu Selanne notched two goals and two assists for the Ducks, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.

"The bounces were going the right way tonight, I guess," Perry said of his performance. "It was one of those nights I was in the right spot at the right time. Hopefully it continues."

Following a wild second period in which the Canucks scored the first four goals to take a 5-2 lead only to allow the Ducks to pull even with three tallies in 1:40, Bernier completed his sixth career two-goal effort with a power-play tally at 8:34 of the third. It appeared Vancouver would hang on this time, but Perry - who already had recorded four assists - stuffed the puck inside the right goalpost with 57 seconds remaining, forging a 6-6 tie.

"I yelled at Kunie (Chris Kunitz) behind the net," Perry said. "(Canucks goaltender Roberto) Luongo turned his head a bit and I stuffed it between his glove and the post, or maybe between his foot and the post."

Selanne picked up an assist on the play for his 700th point as a Duck. However, he was more concerned with the fact no penalty was called after the play as he was high-sticked in the face by Bieksa.

"It was a high stick. It went right through my lip," Selanne said. "I'm really surprised nobody saw it. What are you going to do?"

After a scoreless overtime, Canucks captain Luongo - who was playing in his 500th career game - denied Selanne before Kyle Wellwood gave Vancouver the advantage in the shootout, sliding the puck past goaltender Jonas Hiller on the backhand in the first round. Ryan Getzlaf evened the bonus format on Anaheim's next attempt, avoiding Luongo's poke-check attempt and backhanding the puck into the net.

Hiller made a glove save on Burrows on the Canucks' second-round chance, and both netminders were impenetrable over the next 10 rounds. Travis Moen nearly gave the Ducks the edge in the 11th round, but his first career attempt rang off the left goalpost.

"It hurts," Moen said. "I missed by what, a quarter of an inch?"

Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer had his shot in the 13th round snuffed by Luongo, setting the stage for Ohlund.

"You are in the flow of the game and you just focus on not making the first move," Luongo said. "After a while, you just close your eyes and hope that we can get one so we can win."

Skating straight down the middle of the ice, the defenseman unleashed a shot that sailed past Hiller for the winning goal.

"It was a lot of play (in the shootout)," Ohlund said. "We'll take two goals."

"All those shots, it took a lot to keep my focus," Hiller said. "It's tough to keep concentrating. ... You've just got to accept it and move on."

"We were just thinking, one shooter at a time," Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said. "Roberto came up real strong for us, and it was fun to see Mattias win it for the team."

Luongo had a distinct advantage in the fourth round, when he made a blocker save on former teammate Brendan Morrison to keep the shootout even.

"I know a couple of his moves and I wasn't sure which way he would go, but I tried to take away both by my positioning," Luongo said. "He went with the first move, which I thought he would go, and I was able to get a blocker on it."

Niedermayer and Selanne gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead in the first period with power-play tallies less than four minutes apart, but Bernier began the Canucks' comeback 19 seconds after Selanne's goal with his third of the season.

Kesler forged a tie at 7:57 of the second and Burrows netted a shorthander with 8:37 remaining, beginning a run of six goals in a span of 5 minutes, 54 seconds. Ohlund converted during a power play with 5:22 to go, giving Vancouver a 4-2 advantage and ending the night for goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who made just nine saves.

Hiller entered and allowed Bieksa to score on the first shot he faced at 15:19, but defenseman Steve Montador answered 18 seconds later with his first goal of the season. Blue-liner Chris Pronger tallied with exactly four minutes remaining in the period, capping a spurt of four goals in 82 seconds, and Selanne completed his two-goal performance by burying his own rebound during a power play 77 seconds later to knot the contest at 5-5.

The tally was the 560th of Selanne's career, tying him with Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur for 20th place on the all-time list.

Selanne is in the midst of a four-game goal-scoring streak after netting just one in his first eight contests this season. The "Finnish Flash" has tallied seven times during the run, with all seven goals coming with the man advantage.

Hiller allowed two goals on 16 shots in relief of Giguere.

"It was a weird game," the Swiss netminder said. "It seemed like every puck went in somehow. At least we earned a point. I think we showed a lot of character in fighting back when we were behind by (three) goals."

Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle is ready to erase the game from his memory immediately.

"Every game is not a Mona Lisa that you try to paint," Carlyle said. "Tonight was one of those games. I'm sure both coaches are not going to keep the DVD of this one."

Luongo turned aside 31 shots for the Canucks.
